│║ While many of us can come up with a handful of ║ │
│║ symphonic/gothic metal bands when prompted û ║ │
│║ Within Temptation, Nightwish, Xandria, Lacuna ║ │
│║ Coil, Epica, LeavesÆ Eyes; there are so many ║ │
│║ more of those bands around that are talented but ║ │
│║ yet to receive their share of acclaim and ║ │
│║ appreciation. They could be sitting in the ║ │
│║ second or third tier and suddenly release an ║ │
│║ opus of an album that shoots them into stardom ║ │
│║ and that first tier of quality bands. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ One such band that is making a few leaps and ║ │
│║ bounds in recent years is Dutch symphonic/gothic ║ │
│║ metal band Delain. The band was formed by ║ │
│║ keyboardist Martijn Westerholt in 2002, after he ║ │
│║ left Within Temptation for health reasons. ║ │
│║ Suffering from glandular fever for four ║ │
│║ consecutive years, Westerholt still wrote music ║ │
│║ in this time which ultimately turned into ║ │
│║ material for DelainÆs debut album in 2006. ║ │
│║ Westerholt brought in then unknown female ║ │
│║ vocalist Charlotte Wessels in 2005 and a bunch ║ │
│║ of session members to record their debut album ║ │
│║ Lucidity, which was released through Roadrunner ║ │
│║ Records. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To help get Delain and the debut CD get off the ║ │
│║ ground, Westerholt sent requests to fellow ║ │
│║ musicians/former bandmates to guest on Lucidity. ║ │
│║ These names included Sharon den Adel (Within ║ │
│║ Temptation), Liv Kristine (LeavesÆ Eyes) and ║ │
│║ Marco Hietala (Nightwish). Hietala would then ║ │
│║ guest on every Delain album since, usually ║ │
│║ singing on two songs per album. Other names that ║ │
│║ have lent their services throughout each CD ║ │
│║ include guitarists Oliver Philipps/Guus Eikens, ║ │
│║ while Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory) guested on ║ │
│║ their 2012 release We Are the Others. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It wasnÆt until that album, We Are the Others, ║ │
│║ where most of the metal community really caught ║ │
│║ onto Delain, where they gained exposure, ║ │
│║ publicity and respect for their dedication of ║ │
│║ that album to the memory of Sophie Lancaster; a ║ │
│║ 21 year old English woman who (along with her ║ │
│║ boyfriend) was beaten and kicked senseless by a ║ │
│║ gang of teenage dickheads due to her ægothÆ ║ │
│║ appearance and clothing back in August 2007 (The ║ │
│║ attack has been well documented since and the ║ │
│║ story can be read at this location. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ She died in hospital 13 days later, after the ║ │
│║ family decided to stop life support when they ║ │
│║ were told that Sophie would never again regain ║ │
│║ consciousness. The five idiots involved were all ║ │
│║ eventually sentenced to prison, serving varying ║ │
│║ lengths of sentences. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Delain originally had a distinct sound similar ║ │
│║ to that of early Within Temptation (among other ║ │
│║ bands), which is not surprising considering the ║ │
│║ person who formed Delain used to be in Within ║ │
│║ Temptation. However over the past few albums, ║ │
│║ Delain have slowly evolved and matured into ║ │
│║ their own band, with their own identity and ║ │
│║ sound; yet comparisons will still and always be ║ │
│║ attached with Within Temptation. Other band ║ │
│║ comparisons include Lacuna Coil, Unsun, ReVamp, ║ │
│║ Lyriel, Imperia, Elysion, After Forever and ║ │
│║ Nightwish. Vocalist Charlotte Wessels is a ║ │
│║ talented singer, but she is neither perfectly ║ │
│║ spectacular nor awful, however she is very ║ │
│║ consistent and also quite powerful and ║ │
│║ passionate with her delivery. Easy on the ears ║ │
│║ and despite the at times the poppish style, ║ │
│║ WesselsÆ vocal abilities slots her in nicely ║ │
│║ with the majority of other female singers in the ║ │
│║ same genre. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Despite Delain wandering down the pop goth trend ║ │
│║ that a lot gothic/symphonic metal bands have ║ │
│║ travelled down before, I have noticed a bit more ║ │
│║ grunt and some beefed up songs in the last two ║ │
│║ releases, including their latest and most ║ │
│║ consistent effort, The Human Contradiction. ║ │
│║ Newly awarded position of lead vocalist of Arch ║ │
│║ Enemy, Alissa White-Gluz appears on this latest ║ │
│║ album, lending her raspy shrieking vocals on a ║ │
│║ song (ôThe Tragedy of the Commonsö) in what ║ │
│║ appears to be one of the best tracks on the ║ │
│║ disc. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Having more punch in their tracks allows Delain ║ │
│║ to expand the amount of fans that would enjoy ║ │
│║ their albums, working all the way to possibly ║ │
│║ tapping into the Epica fans and slowly clawing ║ │
│║ their way up to the first tier of female fronted ║ │
│║ gothic/symphonic metal bands. Maybe another step ║ │
│║ towards their material having some much needed ║ │
│║ grunt would be to have a permanent second ║ │
│║ guitarist rather than a couple of session ║ │
│║ members giving additional layers of guitar in ║ │
│║ places. A twin guitar assault would serve Delain ║ │
│║ very well and would greatly determine which path ║ │
│║ they really want to travel down in terms of ║ │
│║ their musical position. Despite the one ║ │
│║ permanent axeman in the band, there are some ║ │
│║ ravenous guitar riffs throughout this disc, ║ │
│║ including on the heavy track ôYour Body is a ║ │
│║ Battlegroundö. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ With that said though, The Human Contradiction ║ │
│║ is quite an entertaining album, creatively well ║ │
│║ written, with songs ranging from the softer ║ │
│║ poppy side of gothic rock, to crunching heavy ║ │
│║ speedy vigorous tracks and your typical ║ │
│║ gothic/symphonic tracks that should almost ║ │
│║ please everyone who enjoys this genre of metal. ║ │
│║ Overall this album is very catchy and darker in ║ │
│║ tone than with previous releases, and most ║ │
│║ likely their most consistent and solid CD to ║ │
│║ date. Is it their best? In terms of progression ║ │
│║ and maturity and evolvement, then yes. ║ │
