The enormous expectation raised by Najwajean's first single (the
praised "Like Those Roses") remains absolutely justified and
excelled by her latest album. With "No Blood", Carlos Jean boosts
all what in that song he pointed out and it proves his skill as a
real recording studio alchemist, discovering in Najwa Nimri's vocal
ductility the perfect ally to complete disturbing stories which
talk about passions and the feelings.
The tense orchestral arrangements and the impacting blusters from
"Dead For You" are useful for introducing a work full of loud
details that will flourish in your subconscious with each new
listening. Leaving behind the easy recurrence which considers
trip-hop to be everything sustained on determinant beats, the album
carries you from the mysterious atmospheres of "Mind Your Head",
with a wink to "Twin Peaks", to the absorbent intensity of "The
Wild Bunch"; from the Arabic exoticism of "I Have No Blood" to the
oneiric sensuality of "Behind The Child"; from the whispering
senseations of "Smile" mixed with unaccustomed naturalness with
original percussion and night cabaret guitar phrasings, to the
evocative shortness of "Take A Breath".
There is a slight variation in the album's version of "Like Those
Roses" compared to the single version as well as the latest cover
of Roy Orbison's "Crying", wrapped in an atmosphere which claims
the frailty of the original by other means, all these complete a
repertoire without gaps; the album has an excellent consistency and
wealth, not many debut albums can brag about this lately.
We could argue about the birth, or not, of a new pop music star (we
personally think so), but nobody can stop feeling after listening
that we found an artist with all the words. In plenitude. And this
is just the beginning.
