▓████▓▌ Raised between Europe and America and shaped ▓▌
▓████▓▌ through years of numerous musical experiences, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Nicolas Laureau a.k.a Don Nino is one of those ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French artists who builds up their own musical ▓▌
▓████▓▌ idiosyncrasy. His first solo album "Real Seasons ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Make Reasons" was a collection of songs which were ▓▌
▓████▓▌ composed throughout the years he's spent in various ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical projects (Prohibition, nlf3 (trio)à). ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ His voice tends to synchronize with the intricate ▓▌
▓████▓▌ melodies and rhythms created using his various ▓▌
▓████▓▌ instruments of choice (acoustic guitar, organ, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ piano, harmonium, electronics etc.).The sober, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ minimalist poetry of his lyrics, touch a surface ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and hint at what seems to be a deeply personal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ source of inspiration.His uncommon approach to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ modern urban folk music gives an original form to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the songs. Far from easy listening, Don Nino still ▓▌
▓████▓▌ uses a great sensitivity, an original sense of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ composition, and the combination of acoustic and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ electronic sounds to show a new path into a modern ▓▌
▓████▓▌ universe of various melodies, rhythms and sounds. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The first album was produced and recorded by ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Fabrice Laureau (a.k.a. F.Lor) who has also ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recorded as of late: Yann Tiersen, Francoiz Breut, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Herman Dune, Dirty Three, Pattonà Again, one will ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recognize his subtle way of using fine tone ▓▌
▓████▓▌ qualities, natural dynamics and room sounds all ▓▌
▓████▓▌ together to help capture the subtleties of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music. The new album "On the Bright Scale" was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recorded and mixed by Nicolas Laureau in January, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ February and March 2004 at Salon de Musiques, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Pantin, France. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ After all the Don Nino shows and the nlf3 (trio) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tours at the end of 2003, he started to record new ▓▌
▓████▓▌ songs for a new album. He sometimes worked on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ really old songs or on very new and fragile ▓▌
▓████▓▌ material. Some songs were written in 1997-1998, but ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the rest are very recent, dating mostly from 2003. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ It took him quite a long time to choose the sounds ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for each arrangement and he did funny things like ▓▌
▓████▓▌ beating an armchair in place of playing th kick ▓▌
▓████▓▌ drum or recording the piano seven times because of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a microphone stand changing its position during the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ take. He really wanted to reach a very particular ▓▌
▓████▓▌ level of intimicy and forced himself almost to do ▓▌
▓████▓▌ everything alone, in his living room, surrounded by ▓▌
▓████▓▌ nothing but instruments and mics. At the very end ▓▌
▓████▓▌ he asked his wife Marie to do some back vocals on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one song and asked musician Benoit Rault to record ▓▌
▓████▓▌ some flutes arrangements for two songs. Fabrice ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (F.lor) helped as well to complete the mix.Nicolas ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Laureau wanted a wide variety of sounds and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ intentions.As he said :"I wanted an album of many ▓▌
▓████▓▌ colors. Let's call it colorist. I'm still really ▓▌
▓████▓▌ impressed by albums that shift colors, references ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and atmospheres, while keeping the same solid ▓▌
▓████▓▌ identity of the band or artist. That was certainly ▓▌
