:: Norwegian five-piece Timeworn roll forth on a wave of ::
:: hardcore punk influenced metal (or vice versa) with their ::
:: debut LP Luminescent Wake. Encompassing a ton of familiar ::
:: sounds and a sprinkling of reminiscent riffs, they've ::
:: somehow managed to produce a record full of songs that feel ::
:: well and truly new to you. This appears to be some kind of ::
:: serious feat in the current hardcore circles- these guys ::
:: deserve a round of applause. ::
:: ::
:: Unlike a solid percentage of hardcore-based records, each of ::
:: the tracks clocks in at a minimum of two minutes giving you ::
:: a good length of time to take in everything it has to offer. ::
:: Opening up with six and a half minute "A Fire Warning", ::
:: things get off to a slow and ethereal start as the track ::
:: drifts across more than two minutes of valuable first ::
:: impression time before plunging into the almost-anthemic ::
:: rest of the song. "Old Foul Hag" takes the "favourite track ::
:: title award" and bustles through in the audio equivalent of ::
:: the cramped front-line of a mosh pit. ::
:: ::
:: The rest of the record carries on in a similar, fluctuating ::
:: manner, generally on the more heavy side of things, cracking ::
:: in with a real slab of heavy metal in title track ::
:: "Luminescent Wake". The sheer length of it and blocky sound ::
:: make it a little arduous to get through (on a Thursday ::
:: afternoon with another three hours of work left ahead of ::
:: you), but closing track "Cellular Dissidence" proffers a ::
:: much needed boost of energy and a proverbial spit in the ::
:: face. ::
:: ::
:: This album offers up a little bit of everything- gang- ::
:: vocal-worthy choruses; slatherings of metal; a good dousing ::
:: of hardcore spirit; chugging d-beat undertones and cartoon- ::
:: esque artwork almost fit for a pop-punk release (but a lot ::
:: darker- it's black and grey and there's some big ::
:: candlesticks). To sum things up in a more concise fashion, ::
:: this album is definitely enjoyable and opens a variety of ::
:: avenues for the band to take with their future material. ::
:: Recommended if you're not fussed about boundary-pushing, but ::
:: want something offering more promise than straight up ::
:: furthering a catalogue. ::
