│║ Welcome to the perhaps surprising Metal Review ║ │
│║ of 2014 - which is all the more surprising, the ║ │
│║ more you have previously dealt with a band like ║ │
│║ SALAMANDRA. After all, it had become quiet ║ │
│║ around the Czechs, of which you last had her ║ │
│║ streaky fifth studio album TIME TO CHANGE ║ │
│║ through your ears for a long time. That was 2010 ║ │
│║ years ago so pretty much 4 - and while you were ║ │
│║ here and there already inclined to give up hope, ║ │
│║ suddenly an album like IMPERATUS comes. Out of ║ │
│║ nowhere, almost unannounced - and then also as ║ │
│║ an independent release. Presumably it will ║ │
│║ remain so that the band at various power metal ║ │
│║ consumer acts as a true genre-tip - and ║ │
│║ internationally gets rather less attention. That ║ │
│║ is, however, plenty of shame you since the ║ │
│║ legendary white SKARREMAR later than 2000 ║ │
│║ (Review) - and who knows, maybe also suggests ║ │
│║ the new album IMPERATUS in a very similar score. ║ │
│║ In fact, you could SKARREMAR as Czech ║ │
│║ counterpart understand to well-known bands like ║ │
│║ RHAPSODY OF FIRE and Co. - Helping the bombast ║ │
│║ in the sense of fantasy-heavy concept album was ║ │
│║ quite similar, although with less symphonic ║ │
│║ elements. IMPERATUS however, does not draw too ║ │
│║ strict limit, and is equal to the full range of ║ │
│║ genres. Representing this is a thrown into the ║ │
│║ room anthem a'la METAL FEVER - which proves to ║ │
│║ be very successful. Simply because it sounds ║ │
│║ very different than we are used by numerous ║ │
│║ potential competitors bands. In SALAMANDRA it ║ │
│║ may just like to also something more playful, ║ │
│║ more varied and certainly happy to go - ║ │
│║ accurate, heavy riffs and rough men shouts ║ │
│║ encounter a strikingly melodic construct the ║ │
│║ much guaranteed - not only the emergence of a ║ │
│║ bad mood. ║ │
│║ In fact SALAMANDRA still have their strengths ║ │
│║ right here - it's about factors such as ║ │
│║ accessibility or a catchy tune, you have to ║ │
│║ expect the Czechs. Today, apparently, more than ║ │
│║ ever: it is the fleet ANCIENT ECHOES with a ║ │
│║ boozy chorus that does not sound approximately ║ │
│║ after FREEDOM CALL (Chris Bay here has a guest ║ │
│║ appearance); the abysmal melodious DEFENCE with ║ │
│║ another over-the anthemic chorus or VICTORIOUS - ║ │
│║ SALAMANDRA know which controller it when and ║ │
│║ where to turn. Or just not - because despite the ║ │
│║ anthem character and sheer catchiness the songs ║ │
│║ seem anything but generic or heard umpteen ║ │
│║ times. Thus, the band succeeds incredible - they ║ │
│║ create extremely melodic power metal numbers ║ │
│║ with immediate effect, without that sets a kind ║ │
│║ of repetition effect. So they have also requires ║ │
│║ the German competition before a lot; but so ║ │
│║ typical and genre-oriented just yet fresh and ║ │
│║ distinctive hardly sounds like a still active ║ │
│║ band. ║ │
│║ But SALAMANDRA can not just happy that the band ║ │
│║ over a much wider range features could already ║ │
│║ move to the last albums to the test. On ║ │
│║ IMPERATUS you are now but for the first time so ║ │
│║ far as to have the different moods merge into ║ │
│║ one another with ease. An example is the Album ║ │
│║ course always some particularly striking titles ║ │
│║ that establish a totally different atmosphere ║ │
│║ than the Deputy feel-good anthems of the album. ║ │
│║ The stomping title track IMPERATUS would be such ║ │
│║ a number, without doubt - take slightly ║ │
│║ oriental-inspired sounds on a straighte ║ │
│║ instrumentalization mid-paced. Also interesting ║ │
│║ is that this time even a ballad cuts ║ │
│║ suspiciously good - COMING BACK HOME the soulful ║ │
│║ this is indeed, and all without clichΘs. ║ │
│║ But what would philosophize about individual ║ │
│║ titles and elements of the album, if it were not ║ │
│║ for something more fundamental factors exist - ║ │
│║ that affect the listening of the album prevail. ║ │
│║ In a positive direction, as it turns out. ║ │
│║ Because all members know their stuff, what can ║ │
│║ only be too happy to listen. If then, however, ║ │
│║ still a striking symbiosis as offered here can ║ │
│║ be achieved - then you can certainly speak of ║ │
│║ perfection. During the acts diverse and rich ║ │
│║ space-occupying riffing as one of the supporting ║ │
│║ elements, the compositions are always upgraded ║ │
│║ with all sorts of subtleties - and never in too ║ │
│║ exaggerated degree. Be it the choir chants ║ │
│║ keyboard trays - all done discreetly and never ║ │
│║ been like trying to distract you from anything. ║ │
│║ That would SALAMANDRA Although not necessary ║ │
│║ anyway, but it just seems unequal effective ║ │
│║ melodies and unused committed carried forward ║ │
│║ Title heard when they plastered with all kinds ║ │
│║ of sound downright rubbish as recently employed ║ │
│║ DRAGON FORCE or ALESTORM to know. ║ │
│║ It remains to get rid of a last mention in the ║ │
│║ direction of the lead singer. While it is on the ║ │
│║ one hand a pity that another change has taken ║ │
│║ place - on the other hand, Jan "Hosta" Bernßtek ║ │
│║ does his job very well. So good and fitting that ║ │
│║ we think he may have been around since the early ║ │
│║ days of the band have been doing. ║ │
│║ Conclusion: Who would have thought - SALAMANDRA ║ │
│║ are back, and full in almost starch. IMPERATUS ║ │
│║ is a more than successful genre album that will ║ │
│║ appeal especially friends of combos also catchy ║ │
│║ as WISDOM or W. ANGELS CONQUEST - but still ║ │
│║ offers enough variety to basically pull all ║ │
│║ power metal listeners into his spell. Wistfully ║ │
│║ true only that the album but ultimately less of ║ │
│║ a concept album has to be accepted eventually - ║ │
│║ just an interlude like THE SPHINX reminiscent of ║ │
│║ old glory days a'la SKARREMAR. IMPERATUS is ║ │
│║ rather a compilation of high-profile hits for an ║ │
│║ album with a noticeable, is spinning from the ║ │
│║ beginning to the end of the album thread has ║ │
│║ become. But that does not matter - because it's ║ │
│║ fun anyway, or just because. ║ │
