aside from new york house legends masters at work, very few of the
artists on this compilation of brazilian and brazilian-influenced
music will strike an immediate chord. what's important to know is
that fans of gilberto gil, airto moreira, baden powell and antonio
carlos jobim will all find something to love on brazilian beats 2
which means that, as on the compilation's first volume, released
last year, stellar takes on cool bossa nova, sweaty samba, tribal
batucada and jazz fusion are all represented, even though those
brand-name artists might be absent.
although the first two cuts, "love and happiness (sunset mix)" and
"brazilian beat (romatt dub)" , are pulsating, percussion-heavy
stompers by the masters at work crew, bb2 becomes fairly
traditional after those electronic workouts, focusing on more on
acoustic instrumentation and pop forms. toquinho weighs in with a
beatles influenced nugget, "zana," that emphasizes his breathy tone
and gentle phrasing. the late brazilian/new yorker chico science's
"coco dub" takes a more aggressive approach, layering waves of
percussion and wah-wah guitar into a psychedelic workout for the
head and hips. other high points include the brassy big-band riffs
of som tres' "jungle" and rosinha de valencia's bluesy, guitar-laced
version of george gershwin's "summertime" .
all together, it's 58 minutes of sunny melodies, fluid chord changes
and tightly woven rhythms, without a single dud. more than anything,
bb2 proves that the recent brazilian music craze has only scraped
the surface of the country's incredible talent pool.
