Aidan Baker is an artist, writer, poet and musician from
Toronto, Canada who is quickly establishing a name for
himself in the world of ambient drones with both his
solo project and his group, ARC. His current release,
Pretending to be Fearless on Fleshmadeword Records can
only go to further this reputation. As with current
ambient sensation, Wilt, Baker eschews a wholly
synthetic approach to drones and extends his boundaries
to traditional instrumentation such as guitars and
drums, as well as certain elements of musique concrete.
I say 'traditional instrumentation', but the way in
which it is utilised is often far from traditional. On
the piece 'The Dog Sleeps Oblivious in the Den', he uses
a wall of amplifier feedback to form the foundations of
the piece and create an atmosphere of heady tension
which is added to by dissonant string scrapes and
explosive metallic rumbles; yet all the time this
chaotic composition is held tightly together by a
laid-back, acoustic drum beat. It is with elements such
as this that the album takes on a jazzy feel, a genre
that lends itself well to this level of musical
experimentation.
Other influences shining through the work include the
post-rock melodiousness of the Constellation family of
artists, particularly on 'A Small, Neat Wound' with its
driving bass melody and echoing drums. It first seems an
almost straightforward track at first, but slowly and
subtly, Baker forms his droning noise-scapes in the
background until, by the end of the track, they have
crescendoed to completely eclipse the main melodies and
twist the piece into a nightmarish collage of metal, gut
and soil.
I must say that I enjoy and can appreciate this
'acoustic' approach to drone music a lot more than the
traditional synthetic method, as synthesisers are
inherently geared towards making bizarre noises, but
with acoustic instruments there is a greater challenge
in creating the unconventional with the conventional.
WiltÆs 'Amidst a Spacious Fabric' which explored the
sounds of zither was critically acclaimed as a
masterpiece of dark ambient music, and I feel that it
would criminal for the same plaudits not to be bestowed
upon Aidan Baker who, on this release, has eclipsed his
American counterpart in terms of depth, subtlety and
overall quality. I cannot recommend this enough, it is a
fantastic release that IÆm sure I will return to again
and again...after dark...with the lights out...clutching
a cushion...and pretending to be fearless.

by groups who would refuse to release anything but current
year music.Well since that time we have been rocking the
scene with classic rock rips.We have made classic music
mainstream in the scene and have been on top in that area as
the number one group in classic rips. We finished 2001 with
3800 rips.As we moved forward in 2002 we found we were also
releasing alot of quality 2k2 rips and saw that we were competing
in that area.In 2002 we finished with over 5000 rips.In 2003 we
plan to move forward and continue to release "THE NEW STUFF" and
strive to be on top in 2k3 rips.We will also continue to remain
