│║ Last year I had my first encounter with ║ │
│║ Victorius through their second long player, ÆThe ║ │
│║ AwakeningÆ. Personally I appreciated the typical ║ │
│║ German up-tempo melodic power metal in the vein ║ │
│║ of Gamma Ray, Freedom Call, Mystic Prophecy, but ║ │
│║ also especially Dragonforce. However, the band ║ │
│║ lacked a self-identity, and the majority of the ║ │
│║ material was mainly up-tempo, which made the ║ │
│║ album a bit monotonous and the songs didnÆt make ║ │
│║ a lasting impression. Nevertheless æThe ║ │
│║ AwakeningÆ was a good album and made a good ║ │
│║ first impression. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ On their third LP, æDreamchaserÆ, Victorius ║ │
│║ simply continues on the same path and again ║ │
│║ delivers typical German power metal. Especially ║ │
│║ the opening track, æTwilight SkiesÆ, fits ║ │
│║ perfectly to what we heard on æThe AwakeningÆ ║ │
│║ and the Dragonforce influences come forth ║ │
│║ strongly. From the following æDay Of ReckoningÆ ║ │
│║ onwards the band also shows a different ║ │
│║ approach. On this record the gentlemen dare ║ │
│║ lowering the tempos more often and also show a ║ │
│║ heavier approach in general. DonÆt get me wrong ║ │
│║ though, because high tempos still have the upper ║ │
│║ hand here. The things is that the gentlemen ║ │
│║ switch more often between speedy riffs and ║ │
│║ blastbeats, and sturdy, pounding headbangers, ║ │
│║ and also dare operating highly melodic (and here ║ │
│║ and there also somewhat progressive) at some ║ │
│║ points. Because of this the album not only ║ │
│║ sounds more versatile, but also more exciting. ║ │
│║ ItÆs obvious that the gentlemen have made huge ║ │
│║ progress on songwriting matters. The ║ │
│║ compositions are more solid and have gained more ║ │
│║ character, are easier to tell apart, and ║ │
│║ therefore more recognizable. With songs like ║ │
│║ æFireangelÆ, æBattalions Of The Holy CrossÆ, the ║ │
│║ title track, and the earlier-mentioned opener ║ │
│║ the album has a couple of beautiful highlights. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Thanks to the good, clear, and contemporary ║ │
│║ production the total picture comes well into its ║ │
│║ own, and all put together æDreamchaserÆ is a ║ │
│║ good power metal album that also leaves no place ║ │
│║ for discussion on both instrumental and vocal ║ │
│║ matters. Despite all that the band still lack a ║ │
│║ self-identity, which makes it hard to stay ║ │
│║ focused from start to finish. But that doesnÆt ║ │
│║ change the fact that æDreamchaserÆ is definitely ║ │
│║ worth the effort, and that it will definitely ║ │
│║ apply to the fans of the genre. ║ │
