│║ Few bands of this genre have pulled off such a ║ │
│║ dramatic rise to stardom as Sabaton in the past ║ │
│║ half a decade. I'm not saying they are ║ │
│║ undeserving - quite the opposite. Sabaton ║ │
│║ achieve what (so far) no power metal band has ║ │
│║ done, personally, for me...move me to tears. War ║ │
│║ is by no means a taboo subject in metal, with ║ │
│║ the likes of Bolt Thrower and Warbringer singing ║ │
│║ about almost nothing else, But by recounting ║ │
│║ actual tales of human conflict, instead of ║ │
│║ glorifying war, Joakim & co. bring the emotion ║ │
│║ to the forefront of their music. Their latest ║ │
│║ release, "Heroes", is so emotionally-charged ║ │
│║ with feelings of regret, respect and honour, ║ │
│║ that it becomes intensely moving. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This album takes a conceptually different ║ │
│║ approach to any other release from the Swedes. ║ │
│║ Sabaton have occasionally flirted with the idea ║ │
│║ of devoting a song to an individual war figure ║ │
│║ ("White Death", "Long Live The King"), but ║ │
│║ "Heroes" is a collection of real-life stories ║ │
│║ from obscure war heroes and heroines whose ║ │
│║ actions were truly courageous. Channelling their ║ │
│║ lyrical themes down to this personal level is ║ │
│║ what makes "Heroes" truly special, and moves me ║ │
│║ to tears without fail. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ All worries about the new line-up were dispelled ║ │
│║ on their highly successful 2013 tour. But if ║ │
│║ that wasn't proof enough for you, the first 20 ║ │
│║ seconds of "Night Witches" will certainly ║ │
│║ convince you of the newcomer's credentials. This ║ │
│║ opening track absolutely explodes out of the ║ │
│║ speakers with huge choirs, bombastic drums, ║ │
│║ regimented rhythms and Joakim's incredibly ║ │
│║ powerful vocals. Nope, nothing has changed in ║ │
│║ the Sabaton formula. They've taken the AC/DC ║ │
│║ approach to their career: if it ain't broke, ║ │
│║ don't fix it. The songs are still accessible and ║ │
│║ drive hard, revolving around the superb ║ │
│║ choruses...of which there are a plethora! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Since discovering Sabaton, each of their albums ║ │
│║ has brought a slight curse. All the songs seemed ║ │
│║ to meld into one epic-sounding mass of choral ║ │
│║ grandeur, and it would take repeated listens to ║ │
│║ distinguish one song from the next. But each ║ │
│║ song on "Heroes" transfers its own identity - ║ │
│║ probably coinciding with the specific stories ║ │
│║ each song has to tell. This ensured that each ║ │
│║ track made its mark on my mind instantly - ║ │
│║ making this Sabaton's most accessible work to ║ │
│║ date. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The sheer consistency of this album almost ║ │
│║ prevents me from dissecting the highlights, but ║ │
│║ there are definitely some moments that pick the ║ │
│║ listener's jaw up from the ground, after it ║ │
│║ initially drops, and force them to respect the ║ │
│║ music. The impact of the previously mentioned ║ │
│║ opener "Night Witches" simply cannot be denied. ║ │
│║ It's always been my opinion that Sabaton's slow ║ │
│║ songs are their best; and "Inmate 4859" carries ║ │
│║ with it an evil, menacing stomp which proves my ║ │
│║ theory. "To Hell And Back" and "Resist And Bite" ║ │
│║ are perhaps the catchiest of the album, ║ │
│║ containing irresistible melodies that reek of ║ │
│║ glory and prestige. And "The Ballad of Bull" is ║ │
│║ utterly gorgeous - the first moment of the album ║ │
│║ that moved me to tears (just read the story of ║ │
│║ Leslie Allen Bull, you'll understand). ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There really isn't much more to say. If you're ║ │
│║ already a fan of Sabaton, you probably own this ║ │
│║ album by now. But if you are still on the fence, ║ │
│║ "Heroes" will undoubtedly convince you. With its ║ │
│║ realistic orchestral keyboards, supreme power, ║ │
│║ and an aura of respectful recognition, "Heroes" ║ │
│║ is a marvel of the genre - possibly Sabaton's ║ │
│║ best. Brief, but truly remarkable. ║ │
