│║ ItÆs not the first time Arch Enemy have changed ║ │
│║ singer, but when Angela GossowÆs exit was ║ │
│║ announced it felt like weÆd truly lost ║ │
│║ something. Not only was she a great vocalist and ║ │
│║ a thunderous performer, but sheÆd become an ║ │
│║ icon, the feisty harpy at the front of one of ║ │
│║ extreme metalÆs biggest bands, doing masses to ║ │
│║ break down gender boundaries in a sometimes ║ │
│║ conservative cultural world. Women had played ║ │
│║ extreme metal before her, but no one had really ║ │
│║ epitomised the extreme female figure quite like ║ │
│║ she did, and definitely not on the same scale. ║ │
│║ The quintessential Arch Enemy image became ║ │
│║ Gossow barking commands and pumping her fist to ║ │
│║ Nemesis in front of an army of fans, inciting ║ │
│║ rebellion. While their earlier albums with Johan ║ │
│║ Liiva are nothing to be sniffed at (often ║ │
│║ actually superior musically), it had become hard ║ │
│║ to imagine Arch Enemy without Angela Gossow, ║ │
│║ being as integral to their image as any frontman ║ │
│║ or woman could be. Fears, understandable as they ║ │
│║ were, instantaneously evaporated however, as ║ │
│║ mere hours after that shock announcement the ║ │
│║ music video for new album War EternalÆs title ║ │
│║ track was unveiled featuring new vocalist Alissa ║ │
│║ White-Gluz, formely of The Agonist, and the ║ │
│║ general consensus was that this was the best ║ │
│║ Arch Enemy had sounded in a very long time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ AngelaÆs last couple of albums with the band, ║ │
│║ culminating in 2011Æs Khaos Legions, were strong ║ │
│║ and enjoyable, but generally nothing to really ║ │
│║ write home about. Arch Enemy are a band with a ║ │
│║ distinct style that they donÆt tamper with all ║ │
│║ that much, and theyÆd perhaps begun to be taken ║ │
│║ for granted. Every few years a new Arch Enemy ║ │
│║ record with some great songs turns up, and then ║ │
│║ you move on, like the melodeath equivalent of a ║ │
│║ new Mot÷rhead album. War Eternal looks to be the ║ │
│║ first album though to buck this trend. New blood ║ │
│║ (letÆs not forget that alongside White-Gluz, ║ │
│║ guitarist Nick Cordle makes his debut replacing ║ │
│║ Christopher Amott) definitely seems to have had ║ │
│║ a re-energising effect on the band, and War ║ │
│║ Eternal is easily their strongest album since ║ │
│║ Doomsday Machine nearly a decade ago, perhaps ║ │
│║ even before that. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Opening up with a gothic symphonic prelude which ║ │
│║ could easily be off a Cradle of Filth record, it ║ │
│║ really kicks into gear with Never Forgive, Never ║ │
│║ Forget in a wave of massive harmonised riffage, ║ │
│║ blistering blast-beat assault courtesy of Daniel ║ │
│║ Erlandsson (one of metalÆs most underrated and ║ │
│║ solid sticksmen) and White-GluzÆs vicious vocal ║ │
│║ approach. The opening run of songs starting here ║ │
│║ and going right through to track six before ║ │
│║ track seven takes another melodic breather is ║ │
│║ absolutely jaw-dropping. Songs like War Eternal ║ │
│║ itself, As the Pages Burn and You Will Know My ║ │
│║ Name (fuck it, every damn song) show Michael ║ │
│║ AmottÆs ability to craft the biggest hooks the ║ │
│║ style is capable of producing, and Alissa ║ │
│║ frequently proves herself as the right person to ║ │
│║ step into AngelaÆs oversized shoes. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While itÆs hard to say if sheÆs better or worse ║ │
│║ than Angela, she certainly brings her own ║ │
│║ flavour to it and thankfully the clean vocals ║ │
│║ she employed in her time with The Agonist are ║ │
│║ avoided, sticking to her ferocious growl even on ║ │
│║ tracks like No More Regrets where it almost ║ │
│║ feels certain that sheÆll break out into an ║ │
│║ operatic chorus and spoil the savage mood a ║ │
│║ little bit. Cleans are great, but theyÆre not ║ │
│║ Arch Enemy. Something like As the Pages Burn has ║ │
│║ a chorus which is all too easy to belt out and ║ │
│║ sing without clean vocals even being on the ║ │
│║ recording, again showing Arch EnemyÆs good ear ║ │
│║ for a particularly curved and clinging hook. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The second half of the record is no slouch ║ │
│║ either, retaining that same level of catchy ║ │
│║ brilliance while occasionally throwing in ║ │
│║ curveballs like the epic symphonic parts layered ║ │
│║ over Time is Black or the Tubular Bells-esque ║ │
│║ Avalanche (Mike Oldfield obviously being an ║ │
│║ influence as evidenced by the cover of Shadow on ║ │
│║ the Wall on some editions, turning the track ║ │
│║ into a balls out denim and leather metal ║ │
│║ stomper). ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Arch Enemy have always been a great band but ║ │
│║ with War Eternal itÆs genuinely exciting to be ║ │
│║ an Arch Enemy fan again. Commercially successful ║ │
│║ as they may be, itÆs about time they won back ║ │
│║ some genuine critical acclaim, and with an album ║ │
│║ as satisfying and all-round excellent as this ║ │
│║ Arch Enemy are back not just walking this time ║ │
│║ but sprinting. ║ │
