  │ 'Bass and Mandolin' is the sort of thing that happens when a pair of   ║
  │    certified geniuses get together to make music without having to     ║
  │  trouble their heads with considerations of genre or commercialism.    ║
  │ There's a treasure-trove of musical ideas here, all executed with the  ║
  │ requisite genius-level craftsmanship. Dynamically the album runs the   ║
  │ gamut from the aggressive and rhythmically complex ('Tarnation', 'Big  ║
  │  Top', 'It's Dark in Here') to straightahead gorgeous lyricism ('The   ║
  │ Auld Beagle', 'I'll Remember for You'). Meyer's piano in 'Look What I  ║
  │   Found' conjures up the ghosts of Debussy and Ravel, while Thile's    ║
  │  guitar adds a Latin flavour to 'El Cinco Real' (the bursts of tasty   ║
  │ flatpicking providing a reminder that 25-odd years ago Thile was the   ║
  │ chief axeman in Nickel Creek). But my personal favourite is 'Monkey,   ║
  │ Actually', which makes up for its slightly arch title with the slinky  ║
  │  groove it discovers around the one-minute mark. This is a very good   ║
  │                               album!!!!                                ║
