│║ ║ │
│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôàthrough the darkness he came with the windàö ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To the mind writing these words, the two æ80s ║ │
│║ releases from Overdrive fall so faithfully into ║ │
│║ the Mausoleum or Ebony Records death pool of ║ │
│║ look, feel, smell & sound that my subconscious ║ │
│║ cruelly refuses to allow me to memory-commit ║ │
│║ both to Planet Records. What can I say, for me ║ │
│║ theyÆre doomed with that near-oblivious, early- ║ │
│║ metal-on-food-stamps visual persona that ║ │
│║ commonly hung stuff like Crossfire, Killer ║ │
│║ (either one), Q5, Blade Runner, ChΓteaux, and ║ │
│║ the debuts from Living Death and even Grim ║ │
│║ Reaper out to sideways looks on the record rack. ║ │
│║ Then again, with this pair of albums as the ║ │
│║ labelÆs only fame to claim (that I know of), ║ │
│║ Planet Records is barely worth the $16 you ║ │
│║ wouldÆve thrown down on the counter for these ║ │
│║ discs. But really Dave, who cares? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Since the quintetÆs earlier Reflexions ep ║ │
│║ stalled out at about five hundred copies, itÆs ║ │
│║ supremely likely the bandÆs debut lp, lovingly ║ │
│║ called Metal Attack, was the first Overdriven ║ │
│║ thing people tripped over while wandering around ║ │
│║ the record shop looking for that next metallic ║ │
│║ morsel or the latest Hall & Oates pop bauble. ║ │
│║ Again, I smile as the sleeve nails that ║ │
│║ metallically-effortless first glimpse, yÆknow, ║ │
│║ where the coverÆs really cool for about four ║ │
│║ seconds, then very shortly afterward its under- ║ │
│║ budget, back-of-a-spiral-notebook quality ║ │
│║ artwork sinks in that maybe itÆs really not. ║ │
│║ Again, nobody cares, Dave. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Well, maybe someoneÆll care that Metal Attack ║ │
│║ carries all the strength and liveliness as ║ │
│║ anything theyÆve etched their logo into in the ║ │
│║ past, made possible by equal parts eager-spirit ║ │
│║ songwriting & a fully blossomed production, and ║ │
│║ with ôDoomwatchö as the only holdover from any ║ │
│║ past release, the few consumers who werenÆt ║ │
│║ strangers to already available material didnÆt ║ │
│║ have to roll their eyes while buying this thing. ║ │
│║ Hell, if those few consumers really had their ║ │
│║ act together, theyÆd notice the same five guys ║ │
│║ showed up to record this ten-tracker as well. ║ │
│║ But here I am describing these guys as if they ║ │
│║ had half a dozen albums outàor at the very least ║ │
│║ like their demos stuffed Christmas stockings ║ │
│║ from here to eastern Persia the years they were ║ │
│║ available. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ First and foremost, most songs have a viable ║ │
│║ hook, ones strong enough to color tracks pretty ║ │
│║ distinguishable from one another. Now thatÆs, ║ │
│║ um, pretty amazing, Dave. Get out much? Well, ║ │
│║ any other day this normally wouldnÆt be the ║ │
│║ reviewÆs tabletop centerpiece, but I just got ║ │
│║ done listening to some real creeaaap that ║ │
│║ religiously refused to locate a curve in its ║ │
│║ songsÆ roads to the shitter, so comparably ôBack ║ │
│║ on the Huntö and ôHeart of Stoneö are thrill ║ │
│║ rides and a half. In other words, much of this ║ │
│║ albumÆs traditional character leaps fairly ║ │
│║ athletically over the average hurdle of yer ║ │
│║ commonly distilled hard rocker/metal clipper, ║ │
│║ and just so you know, no up nÆ coming-in-æ83 ║ │
│║ speed metal is found revving at the line here. ║ │
│║ That, my cherubs, would become part of ║ │
│║ OverdriveÆs world when they arm for next yearÆs ║ │
│║ Swords and Axes. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To authenticate this claim, the pair of tunes ║ │
│║ already called out can do the job. The former ║ │
│║ piles some of it on during a fairly motivational ║ │
│║ chorus, meanwhile the latterÆs moderate gallop ║ │
│║ keeps the formerÆs motion in motion while ║ │
│║ simultaneously nominating it as the bandÆs æhitÆ ║ │
│║ if one needs to wear that kind of ribbon. But ║ │
│║ just in case youÆre still not satisfied come the ║ │
│║ wee hours of ôHeart of Stoneö, look forward to ║ │
│║ the active ôConfusedö and faintly ominous ║ │
│║ grinding crunch of the slower, more methodical ║ │
│║ title cut to kill the side. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Then thereÆs ôThe Battleö, a mostly lively, if ║ │
│║ not formulaic instrumental galloping similarly ║ │
│║ to ôHeart of Stoneö to ignite side two. The ║ │
│║ sturdy ôDoomwatchö and ôSweet Fearö keep the ║ │
│║ flames fanned up to and including the more ║ │
│║ distantly playful ôFreelanceö, but die ║ │
│║ considerably come the albumÆs finale. Trying ║ │
│║ like hell to throw the final handful of confetti ║ │
│║ is the passionately slower ôTime Will Tellö, an ║ │
│║ epic-souled æseriousÆ song whoÆs intentional ║ │
│║ grace is spoken through articulated composure ║ │
│║ and heartfelt single and dual-solo symphonics ║ │
│║ that becomes more and more obvious as it wades ║ │
│║ through its growing melancholy atmosphere. ItÆs ║ │
│║ a compelling enough song that kinda shoulda been ║ │
│║ something like side twoÆs third song, but I ║ │
│║ guess if they wanted your last impression of the ║ │
│║ disc to be a somber one, then theyÆre geniuses. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While rhythmic hooks capably separate these ║ │
│║ tracks, they donÆt get much reinforcement from ║ │
│║ Pelle ThuressonÆs youthfully enthusiastic, yet ║ │
│║ one and a half-toned mid-high range. Yep, if one ║ │
│║ thing seems samey here, itÆs the vocals, and ║ │
│║ since past efforts show very little evidence of ║ │
│║ this problem, I can safely say itÆs something ║ │
│║ new with Metal Attack, which is unfortunate. A ║ │
│║ little less echo couldÆve rectified the chronic ║ │
│║ bleeding together of the lyrics as well, but ║ │
│║ hey. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While this ten-tracker doesnÆt get the raised ║ │
│║ fists that Swords and Axes receives, itÆs still ║ │
│║ an enjoyably workable sphere of wax that didnÆt ║ │
│║ get grooved uselessly like many other albums out ║ │
│║ there. In fact, in portions IÆll take this over ║ │
│║ the follow-up. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ôàwhen you hear it strike you better hide and ║ │
│║ prayàö ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
