:Three remixes of "Radioactivity" - the new version on The Mix was for many
the highpoint of the album, the original ethereal and haunting version from
1975 (which was about radio activity i.e. activity on the radio) reworked
into a pounding dance track (about the other sort of radioactivity - the
one that makes your hair and teeth fall out and your skin glow). Rather
than let the 'Werks remix it themselves (probably difficult since they're
on tour) Francois Kevorkian and William Orbit have been let loose on it
instead.
First up, the Kevorkian 7" remix. Actually, I'll deal with the 12"
remix here too since they are pretty much the same. In short, neither
remix works for me. He's taken the remixed version from The Mix which,
although drastically different from the original, was quite definitely
a Kraftwerk track and tried his best to turn it into a bland identikit
piece of dance music. He's not succeeded because of the strength of the
original song but he's had a good shot at it. Cliched dance sounds
appear, a totally inappropriate synth melody turns up in a couple of
places, the whole track seems to have lost the sharpness and edge it
had before. Thumbs down....
