█ █ Good death metal is like good chicken. You've had it █ █
█ █ before, or something very much like it, but it's still so █ █
█ █ good, it's filling and tasty, goes great with beer, so what █ █
█ █ the hell, why not go for some chicken instead of that fancy █ █
█ █ new dish that is ever so complicated to make but somehow █ █
█ █ unsatisfying (sounds like tech-death doesn't it! How █ █
█ █ droll). Headhunter D.C. is the very best flame grilled, █ █
█ █ marinaded in some spicy-ass sauce. █ █
█ █ Nose-dive guitar squeals, deliciously over-the-top thrash █ █
█ █ solos and bludgeoning chugging: the vicious guitars of █ █
█ █ Paulo Lisboa and Fabio Nosferatus are one of the main █ █
█ █ weapons of the hungry beast that is Headhunter D.C., the █ █
█ █ other being the ridiculously good drumming of Daniel █ █
█ █ Brandao. The latter's cacophonous fills, tumbling rolls and █ █
█ █ neck-snapping charges provide the tough backbone that a █ █
█ █ top-class death metal album needs. Initially I grew weary █ █
█ █ of his propensity toward blastbeats in many of the songs, █ █
█ █ which as a dominant style of drumming can detract from █ █
█ █ otherwise excellent death metal (an occasional grumble with █ █
█ █ Incantation, for example). However, as the album rolls on █ █
█ █ and as do subsequent listens, the talent behind the kit █ █
█ █ becomes obvious; thick, crunchy and above all never █ █
█ █ becoming background noise, always at the forefront of the █ █
█ █ carnage. █ █
█ █ The main beef I have with this succulent chicken is the █ █
█ █ vocals. As often as they are brilliant sepulchral growls █ █
█ █ they are rasps that fail to complement the music properly. █ █
█ █ I have plenty of time for some high-register grating rasps █ █
█ █ in the style of a Schuldiner, a Tardy or a Van Drunen. █ █
█ █ These squelchy Belphegor-like ones seem a waste of time █ █
█ █ though when Sergio Baloff proves that he is capable of a █ █
█ █ truly stomach-turning growl. Some more interesting moments █ █
█ █ are the chants on 'Contemplation (to the fire)' and the █ █
█ █ title track, that reinforce the occult atmosphere of the █ █
█ █ record. █ █
█ █ The concept of the album seems to be that Headhunter D.C. █ █
█ █ are preaching their unholy craft to some kind of rabid █ █
█ █ crowd, with the Dimmu Borgir-style symphonic intro finding █ █
█ █ Baloff calling out his evil libations to the sound of █ █
█ █ orgiastic applause, and the final song 'Long Live The Death █ █
█ █ Cult' featuring many breaks that allow further riotous █ █
█ █ crowd noise to be heard. In between these sinister █ █
█ █ scene-setting moments however are nine tracks that showcase █ █
█ █ the band's true motive. That being thrash-injected death █ █
█ █ metal adrenalin that shares several qualities with Vader in █ █
█ █ their '90s years, with humming tremolo riffs fighting for █ █
█ █ space with razor-edged catchy riffs and whirring solos. One █ █
█ █ of the songs is a cover of Thrashmassacre's 'Angelkiller', █ █
█ █ that fits in pretty seamlessly with everything else on █ █
█ █ offer. 'Stillborn Messiah' and several other tracks feature █ █
█ █ breakdowns, but not that boring stop-start crap you get in █ █
█ █ metalcore and such, these are well-placed atmospheric █ █
█ █ transitions between solos and other exciting stuff. █ █
█ █ Amongst the current renaissance of old school death metal █ █
█ █ spearheaded by Razorback Records, Headhunter D.C. combine █ █
█ █ the old school venom with a touch of thrash and black metal █ █
█ █ to keep their sound grounded in the 21st century. Thing is, █ █
█ █ the album might be a bit hard to find. So why make the █ █
█ █ effort to hunt it down instead of many quite similar albums █ █
█ █ you might find with less effort? Despite some vocal flaws, █ █
█ █ these Brazilians make themselves known with a welcome █ █
█ █ amount of instrumental energy and passion, qualities █ █
█ █ sometimes lacking from more mainstream death metal, and a █ █
█ █ talent for making each song distinct while using the same █ █
█ █ elements. Well worth tracking down. █ █
