Shur-i-kan the brain child of "inspirational" keyboardist Tom Szirtes
was soon spotted by renowned international DJ/Producer Tom Middleton
one night in a club in central London - a relationship started that
brought the track "Niomi's Dream" to release on Middleton's seminal
"Jedi's Night Out" album. The release of the debut album "Advance" in
2001 seemed like a natural move and was received with much critical
acclaim and captured the imagination of DJs including Patrick Forge,
Mike Chadwick, LTJ Bukem, and Pete Lawerence. The following years
have seen Tom producing under a number of different guises and
working with different artists whilst DJing and performing live
around the world from Tokyo and the USA to Moscow.
The eagerly anticipated follow up Shur-I-kan album "Waypoints" is
finished and ready to drop in October, and this time Tom probes into
even deeper and funkier territory than before. The first EP from the
new album "Generations", was released in April and is a storming
broken beat twister, receiving had rave reviews from the likes of DJ
Magazine. How would one describe the Discerning Ear and Shur-i-kan
sound? It is difficult considering the many influences right from
classical to jazz through to dance music and electronica - but as Tom
would describe it: "Assimilate and Advance".
On this Waypoints EP, Shur-i-kan gets the remix treatment once again,
this time by two of the leading figures of the US house scene. First
up is Texan bad boy Brett Johnson whose recent mixes and productions
on his own Aesoteric label have been nicing up the dance in a big
way. Here, his Spring Bump mix of Generations strips it all down to
the bare bones adding boompty beats for maximum bounce. Flip over for
the Mr. Fingers remix of Searching which sees the legend himself
Larry Heard tweak the original into an epic ambient house track with
an old school twist. Classic.
