│║ Salt Lake sweethearts Visigoth have finally ║ │
│║ given us a full length album with high end ║ │
│║ production value to sink our teeth into. Fans of ║ │
│║ Twisted Tower Dire and Grand Magus will find ║ │
│║ familiar tropes, chugging, tumbling down-tuned ║ │
│║ guitars, occasional twin lead guitar, and ║ │
│║ gritty, melodic vocals. Jake Rogers (vocals) and ║ │
│║ Lee Campana (guitar) seem to be the head of the ║ │
│║ band, leading with aforementioned gruff, ║ │
│║ melodious vocals and absolutely stellar guitar ║ │
│║ solos/leads. The rhythm section is tight, very ║ │
│║ tight, being held down by Matt Brotherton and ║ │
│║ Mikey T. 'The Revenant King' is a respectable, ║ │
│║ if sometimes monotonous debut album. A number of ║ │
│║ the songs seem to be kind of fillers, and the ║ │
│║ production also sounds murky at times, failing ║ │
│║ in my opinion to properly showcase the lead ║ │
│║ guitars in particular. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Kicking off with one of two epics, the title ║ │
│║ track of the album kicks off at a steady pace, ║ │
│║ like a cruising cargo ship unstoppable in its ║ │
│║ path. This song really does set the tone for the ║ │
│║ album: chugging riffs, charismatic vocals, and ║ │
│║ blistering leads. Catchy choruses abound, this ║ │
│║ song sets the precedent for the songs to follow, ║ │
│║ which is both a good and bad thing. The first ║ │
│║ four songs seem to plod along without enough ║ │
│║ distinctive elements to set them apart from each ║ │
│║ other (with the exemption of the thunderous ║ │
│║ "Mammoth Rider"). Part of this may be due to the ║ │
│║ fact that none of the songs besides the Manilla ║ │
│║ Road cover dip below the five minute mark. Long ║ │
│║ songs inherently aren't a problem, but with 'The ║ │
│║ Revenant King' it seems some cutting could have ║ │
│║ been done to ensure the songs didn't overstay ║ │
│║ their welcome. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ When Visigoth is rolling it is a moving ║ │
│║ experience though. "Creature of Desire" and "The ║ │
│║ Iron Brotherhood" being the prime examples. "The ║ │
│║ Iron Brotherhood" features an infectious chorus ║ │
│║ which at one point is given the full gang vocal ║ │
│║ treatment, putting you right in the live ║ │
│║ atmosphere. "Blood Sacrifice" is also a song ║ │
│║ destined to be a crowd-pleaser and obligatory ║ │
│║ live song. ║ │

│║ The crown jewel of the album wherein brevity and ║ │
│║ complexity (a trait not shared by much of the ║ │
│║ rest of the album) are at their high water mark ║ │
│║ is the closer and second epic "From the Arcane ║ │
│║ Mists of Prophecy". The galloping rhythms and ║ │
│║ sweeping melodies/harmonies place this as the ║ │
│║ number one track of the album, nothing in this ║ │
│║ song could stand to be cut and everything is ║ │
│║ complimentary and feels right. The use of ║ │
│║ keyboards also really helps to give this song ║ │
│║ texture and personality. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ 'The Revenant King' is a very promising debut ║ │
│║ sporting the real nitty gritty heavy metal ║ │
│║ trademarks we've all come to know and love. You ║ │
│║ won't find anything groundbreaking or new here, ║ │
│║ but the approach is fresh and the talent is ║ │
│║ apparent. It seems the future of Visigoth is a ║ │
│║ bright one if they keep pushing themselves. 'The ║ │
│║ Revenant King' is already a massive step forward ║ │
│║ and I for one lean forward in anticipation of ║ │
│║ what will come next. ║ │
