Gerry Arling and Richard Cameron, better known to discriminating
popaficionados around the world as Arling & Cameron, are preparing
for the nextphase of their global takeover with their amazing new
project, Music For Imaginary Films.
The Dutch post-modern pop duo have been building their base over
the past few years recording under a plethora of aliases on their
Drive In/Easy tune label, keeping dance floors hopping with the
sugar coated club-pop of such "artists" as Popcorn, Aiha, and The
Easy Sisters. As their reputation has grown, inevitable
collaborations with the likes of Fantastic Plastic Machine,
Pizzicato Five, and Cornelius followed.
In early 1999, Emperor Norton did American audiences the great
service of releasing domestically Arling & Cameron Present: All-In,
already much loved by audiences in Japan and Europe. Arling &
Cameron, also spent a good amount of 1999 on the road, presenting
their music live on stage for the first time and blowing away
audiences around the U.S. with their humor, hooks, musicianship,
and good looks.
Richard and Gerry have not allowed their endless promotional duties
for All-In to prevent them from furthering the scope of their music
making. Lately, however, it seems that their minds have been
spending more time on the movie screen than the disco, and the
result is Music For Imaginary Films, a wonderful array of lost
soundtrack songs to a variety of fictitious films and television
pilots ranging from the fifties through the nineties.
Though the films may exist only in the minds of Arling & Cameron,
the music that they've envisioned for these ill-fated projects is
very much real. From the 70's futurist disco of "1999 Spaceclub" to
the spy-jazz of "Hashi The Drug Sniffing Canine" to the jubilant
60's white bread pop of "W.E.E.K.E.N.D.," Richard and Gerry show
that there's no end to the array of musical tricks they have up
their sleeves. With moods ranging from funky to creepy to lush,
Music For Imaginary Films proves to be a wonderful resume of Arling
& Cameron's endless array of imaginary film score work.
Though not an official follow up to All-In, Richard and Gerry have
spared no expense in lavishly realizing their cinematic visions,
using a large cast of vocalists and instrumentalists to achieve a
varied, and at times orchestral, sound. Music For Imaginary Films
offers all the catchy melodies and infectious beats that you'd
expect out of Arling & Cameron, while taking you on a wild ride
just hinted at in their earlier work.
