You will find 16 songs that open your imagination, ranging from
jazz, tango, exotica, and dub soundtracks, all with a new yet old-
fashioned touch. Axel began studying music at age 8, and has been
influenced by such figures as Egberto Gismonti, Serge Gainsbourg,
Nino Rota, Caetano Veloso, Mingus, Monk, George Brassens, and
many more!
Take the opening track, ôSilbad el calipsoö for a jaunt out to an
Ennio Morricone Western. This is latin lounge heaven that reminds
some people of the David Byrne film ôTrue Colors.ö Soon to be
featured on ôThe Fez File Volume 2ö on Schema Records. ôCabeza de
barroö lulls you into a dreamy island setting with a wonderful
vocal harmony and seductive sax. ôVuelan las Hojasö is smooth and
melancholy with an elegant strings section and a real folklore
feel.Featured on V/A ôParadisiac 3ö on Universal France.The title
track, ôEchale semillaö is a caliente cha-cha-cha for all you
kinkylatin DJÆs out there. ôPostcolombinoö gets into some
polyrhythmic bullfight riffs between offbeat horns, piano, and
flamenco percussions. ôNuevo creoleö rises up with sweet horns and
an accordeon straight from the backstreets of San Telmo. "El
regreso del leon bizcoö blends an afro horn section with kalimbas
and an old skool jazz fusion percussion. Axel blends jazz with
folkier forms on surreal songs likeôManteca al techoö and
"D'Oroch╖" AxelÆs first song, in what appears to be an invented
language. The experiments continue fusing muchos styles and poetry
before "Chez la grand-mere Bloch" (featuring the voice of AxelÆs
grandfather) dubs down the mood, and leaves us ætil next time in
ôTaxi Nocturno.ö bound for the backstreets. --www.popbiz.co.jp
