░█ █░ ▀
█ The Sorrowful Sun, the third full length album by █
█ Ice Dragon, continues the surrealistic, █
█ psychedelic style the band presented on their █
█ their first two albums. Originally released in █
█ 2011, the fine folks at PRC Music reissued this on █
█ CD as well as the band's The Burl, the Earl, the █
█ Aether and Tome of the Future Ancients. It's █
█ actually the first CD pressings of these albums, █
█ as they had originally only been released as █
█ limited cassettes and digitally (most of the █
█ band's albums are/were available on the their █
█ Bandcamp page). █
█ Once again these Bostonian masters of fuzzy, █
█ cosmic, psychedelic doom treat you with a potent █
█ mixture of bluesy Sabbathian riffing and the █
█ fuzzed out tone of Electric Wizard crossed with █
█ trippy classic rock vibes and a strong stoner rock █
█ ethos. From the mid-paced stoner grooves on █
█ ôMistress Deathö to the dusty, classic rock █
█ acoustics on ôNear Sun, On Earthö, one thing is █
█ certain, and that is Ice Dragon is a constantly █
█ shifting beast of many colors. When taking this █
█ album right on the heels of The Burl, the Earl, █
█ the Aether, it's less up front doom and more █
█ focused on melodic vibes and stoner grooves. That █
█ doesn't mean that there isn't a fair share of doom █
█ with The Sorrowful Sun, because it is certainly █
█ embodied in the trudging paces of ôInterspecies █
█ Communicationö and the powerfully heavy handed █
█ ôPoseidon's Graspö, it's just Ice Dragon comes █
█ across a little more introspective and soulful █
█ this time around. █
█ Perhaps it's the recording that makes this album █
█ seem a little less doomy and gloomy than its █
█ predecessors. A lot of the feedback and noise has █
█ been trimmed from the mix this time, leaving a █
█ solidly thumping bottom end amidst fuzzy guitars █
█ with enough reverb at times to challenge Electric █
█ Wizard. I must point out the tenacity of the █
█ vocals, because they are truly a highlight. █
█ Oftentimes summoning what could pass for classic █
█ doom from any of the legends, other times sounding █
█ very much like Jim Morrison and other times █
█ evoking the prog tendencies of King Crimson. As █
█ eclectic as that sounds, the true magic of Ice █
█ Dragon lies in their ability to conjure a cohesive █
█ path through the elements. █
█ Ice Dragon is a band that has constantly shunned █
█ normality, yet despite (or in spite of) this █
█ unhinging dedication to producing off the wall █
█ music, the band has really painted themselves as █
█ one of the most original acts in the psychedelic █
█ doom scene. Rather than just embodying past █
█ glories, Ice Dragon is creating their own history. █
█ The Sorrowful Sun is an enjoyable album that, █
█ while sounding similar to the band's earlier █
█ albums, shows a band ready and willing to inject █
█ countless influences into their music, and sound █
█ all the better for it. This album is full of dusty █
█ acoustics, stoner grooves and downtrodden doom. If █
█ any of those things sound good to you then by all █
█ means check this out. █
