Tender, tech-y moves from Magic Fades aka Mike Grabarek and Jeremy Scott,
navigating post-internet fallout and an amorphous areas between future
bass/club, top 40 pop and drill for a synthetic and ventriloquistic approach to
R&B.
The Portland-based production duo focus on super crisp HD production and a
particular balance between sincerity, softness and heart-on-mesh realness for a
full length of signifier-grabbing aptitude and rich, dynamic production.
"Push Thru" is assured in its touchings on the contemporary American radio
zeitgeist, exercising their own aesthetics in a more direct and bold set of
porcelain, neon late night feelings than those found on their earlier 2014
collab with Soul Ipsum "Zirconia Reign". Since then, theyÆve also worked on a
series of remixes and productions for other artists/MCs, flexing studio
abilities and ways of interpreting those radio hits as well as more
Internet-derived sounds and visuals.
Alexander O'Neill types of sensual funk go cyborg in Magic Fades hands on
"IDGAFAM", a relatively stripped back and up jam compared to the texturally
diverse set of future club inspired FX-as-percussion movements of "Industry" or
ôMidnight Temptationsö. Their all-out approach to drama comes to a fore on
tracks like "Ecco" which ends up at a soaring, Satrianian (or maybe more Fripp
circa 1974 Baby's on Fireö) electric guitar solo that sounds almost as if carved
from unimaginably hard granite.
Elsewhere, angelic/ flute and harp arpeggios drift through ocean wave samples on
ôDraped Meshö, but itÆs the heavy melodic turns and extremely deep hooks
smoothed with their cold but sensitive palette; a marbled earnestness that is
well-humoured yet slick.
