Wells, the Scottish keyboard player, composer, arranger and
other things has been compared to Sun Ra and Gil Evans but can
equally be found in the company of a pop outfit like Belle and
Sebastian. In short he isnÆt easy to categorise. This selection
finds him joined by others who are equally hard to pin down.
Trombonist, Annie Whitehead is probably the nearest to a fully
fledged member of the jazz community but she too can be heard
in contexts that include rock, reggae and pop. Stefan
SchneiderÆs work straddles the worlds of rock and electronica
and Barbara Morgenstern, who contributes to two of the tracks,
is probably best known as a singer-songwriter.
This mini album is a fine example of how to produce some warm
and intimate improvisations, like the title track with its
multi-tracked trombone ostinato and æThree Line Prayer Pt 2Æ
where the WhiteheadÆs softly muted tones combine with the
layers of keyboards and fuzzily unidentifiable sounds. This is
music that is insistent but never overbearing and works with
remarkable subtlety.
The juxtaposing of small percussive sounds and the restrained
but muscular trombone features on a number of pieces and is
particularly effective on æA SoldierÆs ShoulderÆ where there is
also something resembling a glockenspiel chiming as clearly as
the surging of the synth patterns.
Much of it sounds like a taster for something longer but the
pieces are still effective in their brief and tantalising
formats. æWaftÆ offers another good example, haunting as it
floats on a bed of gentle keyboard sounds and that trombone
filters melodically into the layers. In some ways it reminded
me of certain recent work by Hugh Hopper, built up from samples
but displaying the human rather than the sterile aspects of
technology.
It is an attractive set of miniatures that exemplifies a mutual
interest in improvisation based around quietly shifting
patterns. They have a habit of enveloping listeners leaving
them both curiously satisfied and yet wanting more.
