▐█▒▒▒ mixing Baileys and lime a curdled mess. But the reality ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ is something quite unique and incredibly good. A ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ surprising result, Alex Skolnick admits in the bookletÆs ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ spiel, to even the band. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Anyone who recognises Skolnick's name will be equally ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ astonished. The once shred-tastic lead guitarist of heavy ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ metal band Testament swapped the mosh-pit to study jazz ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ in New York. Upon teaming up with Nathan Peck and Matt ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Zebroski, double bass and drums respectively, the Alex ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Skolnick Trio was born. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ In their debut album, Goodbye To Romance: Standards For A ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ New Generation, the New York Trio imaginatively re-worked ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ rock and metal covers to critical acclaim (though ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ primarily in the States). These included KISS's Detroit ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Rock City, Black Sabbath's War Pigs and The Who's Pinball ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Wizard. With this, their second album, they have tried to ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ go one better original material. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ The half a dozen newly composed tracks, penned primarily ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ by Skolnick, are highly atmospheric. You can almost ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ picture dimly lit table lamps and swirling cigarette ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ smoke. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Transformation, the title track, has everything: a ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ driving rock beat, jazz harmonies and a catchy melody ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ sung by the Trio (the only vocals on the album), topped ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ off with guest cellist Dave Eggar (who's recently toured ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ with saxophonist Michael Brecker). Other tracks are just ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ as evocative while also illustrating a variety of styles. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Fear of Flying is a chilled ballad, Both Feet In a slow ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ blues, and Scorch is funk number featuring eight-string ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ guitarist Charlie Hunter. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ The original material is good. But what sets the Alex ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Skolnick Trio apart from their jazz contemporaries is ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ their innovative rearrangement of 70s and 80s rock and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ metal standards. Though on first listen it is these that ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ draw your finger to the remote, skipping over their ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ compositions. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ What's so fun about the covers is identifying them. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Skolnick and co. have been respectful to the songs by ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ maintaining their essence while taking them into new and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ exciting directions. On occasion the numbers become ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ almost unrecognisable with different rhythms, textures ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ and phrasings, though remaining as melodic and fluid as ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Miles Davis (a hero of Skolnick's). ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Pink Floyd's Money (covered so many times that Roger ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Waters must be literally raking it in), Judas PriestÆs ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Electric Eye and Deep Purple's Highway Star are all ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ covered on Transformation. Indeed the latter includes a ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ fantastic Skolnick guitar solo, indicative of his metal ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ days, and fittingly ends the album. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Transformation is something different. It isnÆt essential ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ to like jazz to enjoy this album, but it may help. Many ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ rock and metal purists will undoubtedly consider the ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ covers well and truly butchered, the originals meanings ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ gone, giving way to a vintage jazz "elevator muzac" ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ sound. However, for those willing to give it a go, they ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ might find they actually like jazz. Similarly, hard-core ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ jazz fans might be surprised to learn they have enjoyed ▒▒▒██
