The creation of subsidiary labels during the time Coleman
Hawkins recorded for Prestige allowed the saxophone patriarch to
excel in a range of settings, from the mainstream blowing of
Swingville sessions to several Moodsville albums featuring the
virtuosic ballad readings that Hawkins first introduced to jazz.
Along the way, he struck up collaborations with such brilliant
and sympathetic pianists as Ray Bryant, Tommy Flanagan, and Red
Garland, all of whom are featured here. This is the master at
the start of his final decade, at a time when he remained as
commanding as any of the legion of tenor players he had
inspired.
