Eric Dolphy (1928-1964) was the standard-bearer for the New Jazz
subsidiary of Prestige Records. His prowess on alto sax, bass
clarinet, and flute was unprecedented; his comfort with both
traditional and experimental material comprehensive; and his
idiosyncratic approach to harmony, sonority, and rhythm made him
one of the major figures in a period of stylistic transition
from bebop to freer forms. This collection features several of
his most important compositions in their definitive versions, a
pair of standards approached with equal eloquence, and a cast of
like-minded visionaries (including Freddie Hubbard, Booker
Little, Jaki Byard, Mal Waldron, and Ron Carter) who ideally
complemented Dolphy's singular virtuosity.
