Sonny Rollins will go down in history as not only the single most
enduring tenor saxophonist of the bebop and hard bop era, but also
as one of the greatest contemporary jazz saxophonists of them all.
His fluid and harmonically innovative ideas, effortless manner, and
easily identifiable and accessible sound have influenced generations
of performers, but have also fueled the notion that mainstream jazz
music can be widely enjoyed, recognized, and proliferated. Born
Theodore Walter Rollins in New York City on September 7, 1930, he
had an older brother who played violin. At age nine he took up piano
lessons but discontinued them, took up the alto saxophone in high
school, and switched to tenor after high school, doing local
engagements. In 1948 he recorded with vocalist Babs Gonzales, then
Bud Powell and Fats Navarro, and his first composition, "Audubon",
was recorded by J.J. Johnson. Soon thereafter, Rollins made the
rounds quickly with groups led by Tadd Dameron, Chicago drummer Ike
Day, and Miles Davis in 1951, followed by his own recordings with
Kenny Drew, Kenny Dorham, and Thelonious Monk...
"The Bridge" was tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins' first recording
after ending a surprising three-year retirement found the great
saxophonist sounding very similar to how he had played in 1959,
although he would soon start investigating freer forms. In a
pianoless quartet with guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and
drummer Ben Riley, Rollins explores four standards (including
'Without a Song' and 'God Bless the Child') plus two fiery
originals, highlighted by the title cut. The interplay between
Rollins and Hall is consistently impressive, making this set a
near-classic and a very successful comeback.
24-bit remaster of Rollins' classic "The Bridge", recorded in a
piano-less quartet format with Jim Hall on guitar, plus Bob Cranshaw
on bass, and Ben Riley on drums (replaced by Harry T Saunders on
just one track). This 2015 remaster contain other two studio tunes
recorded by the quartet in 1962, and two alternate versions of songs
from the LP taped at Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual TV show shortly
after makin the album.
