║ ║
║ Formed in early 2014, Sleeptaker has already been making waves. ║
║ Hailing from Santa Fe, NM they combine Metalcore with enough odd ║
║ time signatures to please even the purest of Mathcore nerds. Adding ║
║ a dash of ambient tracks takes them to a cerebral level that most ║
║ young bands fail to reach. Self recorded at home studio 'The ║
║ Pigpitt','Could have moved mountains' is their heavy hitting first ║
║ effort. Keep an eye out, Sleeptaker will be taking 2015 by storm. ║
║ ║
║ Could Have Moved Mountains induces that same level of fear, but on a ║
║ much better level than what the Pythagorean Theorem ever did. ║
║ Throughout the entire album a tech-filled ambiance is present, and ║
║ opening instrumental track æBirthÆ is just that. I felt myself ║
║ inching down a dark hallway, waiting for something to jump out at me ║
║ a la Dead Space. The album is very fitting in a horror environment, ║
║ complete with creepy voice clips at the ends of æLacerationÆ and ║
║ æDissolutionÆ. ║
║ ║
║ What really completes the horror theme is vocalist James Eric ║
║ Martin. HeÆs sort of the lynchpin of the band. He reminded me of ║
║ what the Gravemind in Halo 2 shouldÆve sounded like; imposing and ║
║ terrifying. His ability to transition from highs to guttural lows at ║
║ ease makes each vocal part impactful. This is all clearly evident in ║
║ æDescentÆ, a song the represents the best of this vocal style. ║
║ ║
║ As for the rest of the band, they do an adequate job of ║
║ complementing the vocals. Guitars are consistent, albeit they have a ║
║ tendency to dip into the monotonous side. æApostasyÆ and ║
║ æDissolutionÆ have the catchiest riffs on the album, but once ║
║ æSeparationÆ hits the style changes, incorporating some ║
║ rock-oriented sounds. It feels out of place and shows up again ║
║ during the second half of æVacuityÆ. Speaking of halves, the band is ║
║ really fond on switching things up around the half-way point; ║
║ whether itÆs to introduce a snippet of tech or like æVacuityÆ, ║
║ become an epic sounding rock album closer. ║
║ ║
