count basic is a 12-piece european ensemble which probably won't
change anyone's ideas concerning acid jazz. that's not a negative
assessment of the band's talent or musical prowess. rather it's a
symptom of the genre as a whole: a collection of ultra-talented
musicians whose fusion of jazz, soul and funk runs on parallel
tracks and arrives at similar destinations. while count basic's
latest release, 'bigger & brighter', follows the well trodden path
cruised by cohorts brand new heavies and incognito, it succeeds in
generating the laid-back rhythms and instrumental grooves that
acid jazz freaks will happily and willingly fall into.
