│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To start, IÆm not exactly a huge fan of power ║ │
│║ metal. However, IÆve found a very soft spot for ║ │
│║ Gus G and the rest of the members of Firewind ║ │
│║ for one simple reason; their take on power metal ║ │
│║ isnÆt as overly cheesy as most other bands. ║ │
│║ ôBurning Earthö is a perfect example of how ║ │
│║ Firewind shows a bit less of a theatrical ║ │
│║ performance. Probably more so on ôBurning Earthö ║ │
│║ than any other album that the band has released. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Many of the songs have spectacular, catchy riffs ║ │
│║ to go along with the soothing verses that ║ │
│║ vocalist Stephen Frederick provides. While he ║ │
│║ still has a voice for power metal, heÆs also ║ │
│║ able to actually sing with his voice with strong ║ │
│║ amount of control and a variety of range, which ║ │
│║ makes the smokey tone of his voice less of a ║ │
│║ factor. Frederick doesnÆt just stay in one ║ │
│║ octave for his vocals which is very typical of ║ │
│║ power metal so itÆs nice to hear a wide variety ║ │
│║ of vocal points. Sure, some of the choruses are ║ │
│║ a bit too similar with a few songs, but theyÆre ║ │
│║ still more enjoyable than most power metal ║ │
│║ choruses so IÆd be more than happy to hear it ║ │
│║ overused for two or three songs on one album ║ │
│║ compared to sounding similar to an entire genre. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Gus GÆs guitar work is pretty solid here. He ║ │
│║ definitely has some strokes of brilliance in his ║ │
│║ many solos, particularly in ôThe Fire and the ║ │
│║ Furyö, the guitar driven instrumental track in ║ │
│║ the middle of the album. Surely one of the ║ │
│║ highest notes of ôBurning Earth.ö However, as ║ │
│║ memorable as the riffs are, some of them are ║ │
│║ very similar, if not, identical. For example, ║ │
│║ the main riff for ôThe Fire and the Furyö can ║ │
│║ also be heard in the opening riff for ôWaiting ║ │
│║ Stillö, so thereÆs definitely a decent amount of ║ │
│║ repetition throughout this album. There are ║ │
│║ still some pretty strong stand-outs throughout ║ │
│║ ôBurning Earthö though. ôMy BrotherÆs Keeperö ║ │
│║ has an incredibly addicting opening riff thatÆs ║ │
│║ very different from the rest of the mid tempo ║ │
│║ songs. Along with this, comes the verse and ║ │
│║ bridge riffs from ôYou Have Survivedö which are ║ │
│║ incredibly groovy in a sense that they can ║ │
│║ really get you into the songs with their back ║ │
│║ and forth, up and down gallopy feel. All the ║ │
│║ more reason for the song to get stuck in your ║ │
│║ head after a few listens. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While the drummer definitely has talent, IÆve ║ │
│║ theorized that he held back slightly on ôBurning ║ │
│║ Earthö. For a long time I thought that he was ║ │
│║ just a good drummer in a great band. However, ║ │
│║ during the fade-out of ôYou Have Survivedö, if ║ │
│║ you listen very closely, you can here the ║ │
│║ drummer break out into a flat out double pedal ║ │
│║ that reaches a speed easily reminiscent of ║ │
│║ Hellhammer or Inferno. While it seems hard to ║ │
│║ believe, I had to give it multiple listens just ║ │
│║ to make sure I wasnÆt hallucinating. ItÆs ║ │
│║ definitely there, and you can listen to it for ║ │
│║ yourself. It makes me wonder if he felt his drum ║ │
│║ parts contained all they needed to musically ║ │
│║ fulfill the songs up to his standards, or if he ║ │
│║ was holding back; because no where else on the ║ │
│║ album does he break out into white noise on his ║ │
│║ bass drum except for those few fading seconds. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ For the most part, I think this album is good. ║ │
│║ It could be better if a few of the guitar riffs ║ │
│║ werenÆt as recycled as they were, or at least as ║ │
│║ obvious as they were thrown out in the open. I ║ │
│║ donÆt think using the same riff to start two ║ │
│║ different songs is a good idea, but maybe it ║ │
│║ couldÆve been pulled off a bit better if the ║ │
│║ riff was re introduced in the middle of the song ║ │
│║ rather than at the beginning again. Other than ║ │
│║ that, the riffs, solos, and vocals are great, ║ │
│║ and make for an enjoyable and easy listen from ║ │
│║ start to finish. In the end IÆd say this is a ║ │
│║ pretty original album given its genre, thatÆs ║ │
│║ great, and that had the potential to be a bit ║ │
│║ better if a few tweeks wouldÆve been made in the ║ │
│║ right places. ║ │
│║ ║ │
