              Exotica has always been one of those
              musical styles that gets little
              attention. Perhaps a little unfairly
              lumped in with easy listening - you can
              usually find old albums sitting side by
              side with dodgy organ records and
              covers albums in charity shops - it was
              something of a boom industry in the
              1950s. This excellent collection of
              rare, obscure and little known 1950s
              exotica from the Captain High label
              tells the story of the genre's
              gestation and boom, showcasing its'
              links with jazz, traditional Hawaiian
              and Polynesian styles and, of course,
              easy listening. It's a rather wonderful
              collection, all told, where tribal
              drums and lilting pedal steel sit side
              by side with monkey noises, parrot
              squawks, odd spoken word interludes and
              lashings of original vinyl crackle.
