RELEASE NOTES
Welcome to 'February'. This is
the second in series of 12
releases commemorating the
year 2004. In some ways, this
project is an experiment in
time management, as it is
proving to be very time
consuming, to the point where
other relationships and
projects are suffering. At the
same time, this has so far
been a highly enlightening
experience, very
educational-and this is only
the second release.
Where 'January' suffered at
times from under-developed
themes and a tendency to drone
on, I have attempted to
achieve greater union with
accepted song structure,
though without much success. I
have also introduced a
stronger beat element to these
songs, which should make them
more accessible to the
listener. Even better, the
songs are relatively shorter
than those on 'January', which
much of the chaff cut away to
reveal tighter structure and
greater attention to detail.
Though my social life quite
obviously suffered as a result
of making this album, I have
managed to create a longer yet
more involved and engaging
release than 'January' was.
The album begins with a brief
display of the 'February'
theme, which gets repeated
later in the album.
Immediately following is 'Your
V(d), a heavily distorted
violin and a droning tune
modeled after My Bloody
Valentine. The crazed drums
add some color, but the violin
is key. Following that is a
disco-style tune which the N
(who is the subject dancer of
this tune) describes as
sounding like "the theme from
the old-school Castlevania.
You know, the one where you
have to swing from level to
level." My intention was
something more along the lines
of, well, dance music, but ok.
Then we have the 'February'
theme played out as a Phillip
Glass/Steve Reich composition.
ADD sufferers beware. 'The
Fills' is a track an attempt
at creating a jazz quartet
sound, with diverging and
competing trumpet/sax solos.
Whether this works I will let
you judge. Then follows 'XGF',
a tune about frustration and
anger with an x-girlfriend.
The song does not really delve
into the complexities of a
relationship, but it does
capture some of the emotional
distress involved. It is an
early attempt at the drum&bass
genre, though again whether it
works is up to you. Then
follows a remix of 'February',
this time with an expletive
before it: same warning, same
fun. 'Your Words in My Head'
is a return to the dance theme
of the second track, though
without as much disco sound.
It began life as a somewhat
ominous-sounding hip hop
track, though my lack of
rhyming ability consigns it to
instrumental track status. If
you come up with a good rhyme
for it, let me know-maybe you
can feature on a future
release of this song. The
title comes from a
conversation with a person
that led to me getting
confused and enraged and
generally upset about things.
I like to think the music
reflects that, even though it
came first. 'Groundhog's Day'
is a return to the February
theme, with a greater Steve
Reich influence. Think of it
as a tape loop experiment, but
without the tape.
One final note: my mastering
facilities are a bit lacking,
so some of these tracks may
peak at different levels than
others. Until you have heard
the entire CD and know your
system can handle it, please
monitor your sound levels
closely. I do not foresee any
problems, but neither do I
accept any responsibility for
damage associated with these
sounds. It's not Merzbow, but
it can get out of control.
