once in a while a hip hop outfit comes along that defies genre,
challenges stereotypes, and appeals to both ardent rap fans and
eclectic music lovers alike. def harmonic are just that. as their
name suggests, the crew from milwaukee in the us of a embrace both
the gritty urban style music of the def jam legacy, whilst
creating harmonious musical patterns that evoke warmth, honesty
and humour.
everything in def harmonic is about paradox and balance, and the
debut lp, "embrace", marks the joining of two sides of the same
coin; a point where the rawness and musical beauty of hip hop
become one. the two main vocal talents of the outfit, lunaversol 9
and jason todd, provide both compliment and contrast to each
other. on some tracks, the pair could be mistaken for a modern day
miles and betty davis partnership, at one in genius, vocal madness
and a spark that's liable to set a forest a blaze!
"embrace" may well mark an important step towards how hip hop is
perceived by anyone who is open minded enough to listen. the album
draws not only on the influences of the genre's pioneers, but also
the likes of the digable planets, ursula rucker and celestial jazz
masters like sun ra, leon thomas and legendary wordsmith gil scott
heron. nor does the album rely solely on the vocal talents of its
verbose pair to induce the proverbial shivers down the listener's
vertebrae. "tonight as i stand", with its melancholy piano hook
and sultry bluesy sample, nestles perfectly between the ominous
"villain" and the electro aggression of "send your love".
elsewhere, todd and lunaversol 9 express optimism and self-belief,
despite oppressive and narrow minded societies, on "best i can",
and a sense of humour on "whales!" a ditty that could provide an
alternative relaxation soundtrack for the more twisted meditation
lover!!
enter the world of def harmonic...forget preconceptions...expand
your mind...and your ass will surely follow.
