▓▓██████▓▓▌ ▐▓▓██████▓▓
▐▓███████▓▓ From behind a death mask of stubble, Tim Burgess ▓▓███████▓▌
▓▓███████▓▓ is glowing. Late last night - well, early this ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ morning - The Charlatans finished mixing their ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ eighth album in north London's Mayfair Studios. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ After the final echo-ing curl from Mark Collins' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Les Paul guitar drifted into the great rock ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ether and the hum of the amps faded, as the last ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ clatter of Chemical Brothers- powered beats ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ rattled the door frame, the band retired - well, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ bolted - to the studio lounge. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ And there the party began. Drummer Jon Brookes, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ noting that the band had been working in their ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ recording studio, Big Mushroom in Cheshire, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ practically every day for the previous 12 ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ months, led the steam- letting charge. Martin ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Blunt reckoned some congratulations were in ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ order: to Ken Nelson, who mixed six of the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ tracks in the Liverpool studios where he had ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ worked on Coldplay's two albums, and to ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ themselves - despite having been heavily ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ involved in producing most of their albums, this ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ was the first album that was solely produced by ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ The Charlatans. Heated debate ensued over the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ track 'Apples And Oranges', the first track that ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Collins and Burgess wrote during their writing ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ retreat on Bodmin Moor last winter. Collins ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ insisted that that was no title for a tune with ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ such a militant, martial beat. 'Rag Bag World' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ was way better. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess retorted that for an album as ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ fundamentally different from the neon'n'asphalt ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ LA swagger of Wonderland, the band's last album, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ this album needed at least one song with such a ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ quintessentially British name. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Tony Rogers drank deep that night, three of the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ compositions heÆs been working on at his home ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ studio - 'Loving You Is Easy', 'Cry Yourself To ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ sleep' and 'High Up Your Tree' - complete with ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ the keyboard playerÆs lead vocals on the former, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ rounded out the albumÆs 12 tracks. He would be, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ by a triumphant margin, the last to bed. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Elsewhere in the evening, toasts were raised to ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ the 25th (and one week) anniversary of Bob Dylan ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ and Johnny Cash's legendary studio session in ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Nashville. The bootleg of those remarkable two ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ days - from which Nashville Skyline's version of ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'Girl From The North Country' was the only track ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ever released - has been one of Burgess's most ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ cherished records for ages. For the singer, that ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ bootleg was a totemic record during the making ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ of the new album. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Then things went Libertines- shaped. Carl Barat ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ friend of the Charlies, had got a sniff of the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ party. Soon, an addled version of the Libs' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ masterpiece 'Death On The Stairs' was being ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ recorded on DAT, with Burgess on vocals. The ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ fun, it was clear, had only just begun. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ There was never any doubt that The Charlatans ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ could still rock, and rock in consistently ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ intriguing new ways. But just in case there was, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ they've made Up At The Lake. Fifteen years since ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ forming, nearly three years after the scorching ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ rock'n'soul of Wonderland, they've again jinked ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ enthusiastically in a new direction. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ For a start, having introduced his masterful ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ falsetto on the last album, Burgess has binned ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ it on this one. It didnÆt fit the vibes this ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ time round. Up At The Lake is, in Blunt's words, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'stripped down', but not in some neo- folk ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ acousto- cobblers stylee. 'Dead Love' may not ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ feature any drums, and be flush with Collins' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ delicately picked guitar, but don't break out ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ the stools just yet, granddad. The cello and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ viola players brought in from the Liverpool ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Philharmonic lend dramatic power to Burgess' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ scouringly heartfelt vocals. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Meanwhile, the title track and first single is, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ simply, a rocket. Another classic Charlatans ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ anthem, it's a toast to the high life, but also ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ to the lows its exuberance belies its bleakly ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ bucolic origins. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Last November, Burgess and Collins took ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ themselves off to a cottage on Bodmin Moor, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Cornwall. In one direction, the jail. In the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ other, the lake. All around, sheep and cows. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ They had a telly, and Burgess brought an armful ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ of records (including the Cash/ Dylan bootleg), ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ and Collins brought his guitar and what Burgess ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ calls 'his secret stash of chords and riffs', ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ and they would share the cooking. And they would ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ write some songs together. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ They had done this before, gone away together, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ for 1997's Tellin' Stories. Then, Lake ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Windermere was wellspring for such Charlies ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ classics as 'North Country Boy' and 'How High'. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ But in the wake of Burgess' 1998 flit to LA to ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ live with his American wife, songs had latterly ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ been written via heavy bits of travelling. That ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ worked for Wonderland, a record full of speed ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ and neon and jet- trail guitar, made by people ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ zooming back and forth across the Atlantic. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'I could always smell Wonderland,' grins ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess. 'The smell of asphalt...' Up At The ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Lake couldn't be in greater contrast. They ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ wanted to write it differently, for creative ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ reasons, and for personal ones. Which, come to ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ think of it, are pretty much one and the same ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ for The Charlatans. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'The first song me and Mark wrote together was ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ "Another Rider Up In Flames" [on their third ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ album Up To Our Hips]. Back then, I did feel we ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ were the son's of Mick 'n' Keef,' gurgles ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess, ever the wide- eyed innocent - even ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ today, the morning- after- the- night- before, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ when they're double- glazed over. 'It was an ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ awakening. But now we live in different parts of ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ the word and we have different ways of doing ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ things. I'll be honest, things did get difficult ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ for us when I moved to LA. But those differences ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ count for nothing when we're together: we just ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ click, and we can just write.' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Post- Wonderland, the various members of The ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Charlatans enjoyed a brief sabbatical. Burgess ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ made a solo album, I Believe, and toured with a ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ new band (including a couple of stadium support ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ slots with The Rolling Stones). Collins did a ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ bit of production, and toured with Starsailor. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ The 'Blunt and Rogers Roadshow' toured Ireland ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ DJing and party crashing, Rogers also produced a ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ single for Moco (which was 'Single of the Week' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ in NME). Jon drummed on some Chemical Brothers ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ tracks and gave his support to all. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'Some people thought this [album] wouldnÆt ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ happen, that we wouldn't have another Charlies ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ record,' admits Burgess. 'I never thought that, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ but everyone felt very, very weird. I knew it ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ wouldnÆt be the end of The Charlatans, but I ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ knew it would be a new beginning for us. I have ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ to learn, man. Moving to LA, doing a solo ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ record, even dabbling in Djing - you have to get ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ food for your record.' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ So, for The Charlatans' eighth album Burgess and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Collins did things differently again. They went ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ to Bodmin, and gave themselves ten days to do ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ten songs. They did ten in nine, and allowed ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ themselves a big, two- man party on the final ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ day. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ The first song they completed was 'Apples And ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Oranges', with it's stomping Who feel (and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ contentious title). The stately 'Sing Me A Hymn' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ was the one most closely inspired by Cash and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Dylan. Deploying his hitherto unused bottom ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ register, Burgess evokes the spirit of another ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Dylan song, 'Lay Lady Lay' with his deep- ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ throated croon. 'Watch You In Disbelief' picks ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ things up again, channelling the snake- hipped ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ rhythms of 'Sufragette City'. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'Dead Love' was completed quickly. Burgess ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ already had the lyrics, having come up them ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ while in France on his solo tour, and had ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ shouted the lyrics down his answering machine at ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ home in LA. Also dating from LA is 'Blue For ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ You', a song 'about missing someone'. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'The time, the writing process was very...' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess searches for the word, sorting through ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ his memories of isolated, freezing, rainy Bodmin ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ in winter, and through the debris of last ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ nightÆs post- album post- mortem. 'Mysterious,' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ he decides eventually. 'It reminded me of Friday ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ the 13th, Camp Crystal Lake, feeling alone and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ vulnerable. ThereÆs a bit of that on the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ record.' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ The Charlatans premiered three of their new ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ songs at Manchester's Old Trafford cricket ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ground, in front of 20,000 fans, last summer. Of ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ these - the clangy 'Blue For You', the uplifting ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'Try Again Today' and the ragged 'Feel The ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Pressure' - it is the latter that is most ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ immediately noteworthy, courtesy of the Tom and ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Ed Chemical's fizzing production. (The long- ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ standing friendship between the two bands also ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ finds form on the Chemicals next album, on which ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess sings and Brookes drums.) Finally, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ honourable mention to Rogers' 'Loving You Is ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Easy'. Rich with multi- tracked vocals and with ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess relegated to keening backing vocals ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ (singing what sounds like a cheeky sample of ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'YouÆre So Vain'), it's set to be a live killer. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Another string to their bow, another arrow in ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ their quiver. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'It was a good record to make,' enthuses ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess. 'If me and Mark had gone to Bodmin on a ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ different day or at a different time of year, it ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ would have been a different record. I really ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ love that about records: itÆs a struggle to get ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ there, but when you get there it just becomes ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ what it is. ItÆs a snapshot. 'But so many years, ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ so many snapshots. How have The Charlatans kept ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ it together? Why are they still here? Why are ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ they still happening - in both senses of the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ word? ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Burgess rubs his stubble and focuses. 'We love ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ music, and we can't stop. I'm a searcher,' he ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ glints. 'We all are.' ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ And then he's off again, his attention drifting ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ back to the party that only finished five hours ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ago. He starts on about Up At The Lake's rummest ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ moment, the Small Faces- esque 'Bonafide ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Treasure'. All those backwards vocals and fruity ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ key- changes... ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'I really wanted it to sound like "Lazy Sunday", ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ 'he nods. He thinks it and the title track both ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ link to The Beatles doing 'Your Mother Should ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Know' while walking down the stairs in the ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ Magical Mystery Tour, all white- suited and top- ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ hatted, 'doing the Fred Astaire dance. It also ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ reminds me of Dixon Of Dock Green-' he starts. ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ But there we must stop him. His brain is ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ boggling too fast. That must have been some ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ party. Fair enough. Up At The Lake is some ▓▓███████▓▓
▓▓███████▓▓ album.s ▓▓███████▓▓
