  :: Infernal War have truly taken their time with following up ::
  :: the acclaimed Redesekration record back in 2007, although ::
  :: if you were paying attention you would have caught the EP ::
  :: and split they released in 2009 and 2010 respectively, ::
  :: which together had enough material for another album. ::
  :: Still, five years after even that last stirring from their ::
  :: camp, AXIOM is an album I wanted to really deliver. ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: Even compared to songs like 'Spears of Negation' from ::
  :: Conflagrator, which was itself on a whole new level in ::
  :: terms of ferocity, this new album is the angriest, harshest ::
  :: and most unstoppable thing these guys have ever recorded. A ::
  :: lot of the members have been involved in bands like ::
  :: Voidhanger and Iperyt, who aside from a song here or a riff ::
  :: there I'm not really taken with; this to me sounds like ::
  :: what these guys do best. Don't expect much of the slower ::
  :: tempos or textural atmospheres from the three songs on ::
  :: Transfigurations here either - those influences are left in ::
  :: 2010, with the exception of the doomlike intro to the ::
  :: appropriately titled 'Transfigure'. I actually enjoyed the ::
  :: material on that split as much as anything else the band ::
  :: has done, but this denser and more pissed off version of ::
  :: the style on Redesekration becomes the band well indeed, so ::
  ::      it              isn't              a               problem.      ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: As soon as 'Coronation' begins the militant audio slaughter ::
  :: is unleashed and it just doesn't stop. Stormblast's drums ::
  :: are as precise and blisteringly fast as ever. And when ::
  :: those rapid guitars begin to buzz back in after the slower ::
  :: part on the opener you realise this album damn well means ::
  :: business, and nobody's getting out alive. Inspired stuff. ::
  :: The wailing death metal solos that erupt across the band's ::
  :: music - like so many hot orange sparks from a road surface ::
  :: cutting machine - are still around too. ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: I feel like overall there is a much less "military" vibe ::
  :: than on Redesekration and Conflagrator - those records had ::
  :: a feel akin to Impiety's barbaric but highly precise ::
  :: machine gun battering, while AXIOM is more like an ::
  :: outpouring of pure hot blooded violence and ill will. ::
  :: Naturally there are still tracks - like 'Eater of Hope' ::
  :: that make you think of nothing more than dry ice, dim ::
  :: lighting, chains and bullet belts and all the rest of it, ::
  :: so that kommando vibe is still there. This album is still ::
  :: basically about having your face melted and bones broken by ::
  :: unconscionable amounts of high-velocity blast beats and ::
  :: catchy but nihilistic guitar riffs - this band just write ::
  :: songs well enough to give those blasts a way to be as ::
  ::      exciting                    as                    possible.      ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: Many of the songs are marked by some very, very nice ::
  :: pounding mid-paced bits, or have something else that gives ::
  :: it the exact context and vibe it needs - brief as they are. ::
  :: 'Coronation' and 'Into Dead Soil' are particularly good ::
  :: examples, and highlights for where the band does something ::
  :: they haven't done before. 'Militant Hate Church' has a ::
  :: trundling opening that leads to the band's cacophanous ::
  :: onslaught coming back in. 'Eater of Hope' has a rather ::
  :: sadistic sounding thrash bit that could well have been ::
  :: meant for Voidhanger at some point before they realised it ::
  :: fit better. The title track 'Axiom' is the album's "big" ::
  :: moment in terms of atmosphere and dynamics, with the head- ::
  :: down blasting of the rest of the album almost entirely left ::
  :: aside for a song that plays out like a mix of Enthroned, ::
  :: Behemoth and Dark Fortress - just with that trademark ::
  :: insane drumming from Stormblast, and vocals that sound ::
  :: quite similiar to Sonneillon from Blaze of Perdition. ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: The production is a bit different this time round. While I ::
  ::      haven't been  impressed with  every  project  Mgla's M  has      ::
  :: leant his hand to in the past year or so, I do appreciate ::
  :: that he endeavours to give each album he works on a sound ::
  :: that suits it rather than imposing his own sonic style. ::
  ::      He's more a Swan÷  than a Tagtren  in that  regard. So this      ::
  :: record sounds excoriating, heavy, brutal and sharp as a ::
  :: dozen flung knives, perfectly suiting Infernal War. I would ::
  :: have liked heavier drums, but they are still good and it ::
  :: does have the effect of bringing me back consistently to ::
  :: the guitars rather than being flattened by the percussion ::
  :: all the time. So I can see the line of thinking. ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  :: Infernal War claim of this new album, "we have no doubt ::
  :: that AXIOM is our crowning achievement." Of course it isn't ::
  :: very hard to find bands and musicians who claim that their ::
  :: new shit is the best shit they've done - but in this case I ::
  :: think they are probably right. In fact they've improved (in ::
  :: leaps and bounds) as they've gone on. As for this new one, ::
  :: it's tight, controlled and conceptually solid, Infernal War ::
  :: have really outdone themselves here. If you love extremely ::
  :: aggressive, blasting black and death metal, but well- ::
  :: written to boot - such as Negator, Marduk, Draconis ::
  :: Infernum and Impiety for example - then this is strongly ::
  :: recommended. And if you just simply like metal that blasts ::
  :: and blasts, then you're definitely getting that, plus a ::
  :: whole lot more memorability than you usually ask of the ::
  :: music you listen to. ::
  ::                                                                       ::
