Debut release from this prodigal dark ambient act from the lustrous dark
ambient purlieu that Glass Throat Recordings purveys with other label mates
as Ruhr Hunter, Chaos as Shelter, Gruntsplatter, et al.
What separates Beneath the Lake from other dark ambient artists? In
addition to using more organic and analogue instruments such as cello and
guitar each track is further embroidered with "environmental recordings"
as so stated on the booklet's interior track listing. These comprise of
the world of the animist, the creatures and the elements, yet don't be
expectant to spot the plethora of digitalized animism in every nuance of
Inside Passage...
The album begins with 'Water' whose environmental recordings include sea
lions and water, and while water is prominent as the long track wanes for
the most part the track plunges you deep into the icy chill, dragged
down to where luminous echoes of a world above throng in such density
one is frozen not by the frigid depths but by the complexity of sound
compressed in liquid particles for fear of moving, lest being uncovered
by the myriad sonorous segues. 'Inside Passage' proffers the use of
whales and water; the large mammals have for decades played a repetitive
role in ambient music from the dark industrialism of Megaptera to the
spine curdling 'relaxation' in an osteopath's waiting room, yet
Beneath the Lake do not cram the inimical beauty but instead rime you
where you have been taken, in the deeps where the beguiling lassitude
of the ocean behemoths tints unsettling hues. It is not until 'Tree
Descendant' that melodic strains of guitar bow with cello in a dolorous
round, a surreal lapse in the submarine journey, yet twanged in an
electronic evisceration and vicissitude that shears away any such
luxuries of complacent escapism - the phased and flanged use of wasps
soon becomes an importune presence yet, in time, both of these elements
subsume into an almost primordial morass. 'Near the Horizon' is a
leaching choir, one built on the backs of wolves and guitar feedback
whose raiment is a yawing of sound above and below, as if the surface
of some sea-like lake was broken with sun about to set. 'Temporal
Tributary' is in meaning as multi-faceted as its aural qualities.
Shimmering in the sussuration of cymbal the work blisters in Inade-like
sidereal imaginings, the use of the Owl here a raucous predator in the
drifting current. 'Kootna Hora' is the only track to not feature any
environmental recording and it does stand out in succinct modal tones
puncturing the organic soup that comprises most of the album. Wolves
return in 'Frail Sinking Spirit' disbursing a malign and equivocal
undercurrent impugning the elevated, tragic chorus preceding it; restive
and furtive the music wends ever downward, to a realm where not even
the icy illume can shine. The final track, 'Nature Devastated' calls
only from the Wind but delivers a monumental ending to the album in a
near twenty minute epic and while not uncommon in the dark ambient
world, the track immediately demands attention, aural notice that soon
squirms in dissonance and the muted thrum, tempo accelerates and the
music gently sways as if on an edge of an abysm before it fades and
the true nature of the track intercedes... the ending you'll have to
listen for yourself.
Far from anechoic this album reverberates continuously yet each track
markedly stands from the next with inventive use of said 'environmental
recordings'.
Beautifully packaged in simple jewel case in glacial tones and sparse
natural landscapes, the card insets shimmer with silvered glitter as if
frozen into the weft of the card itself.

Today, the 22nd of July, AMOK celebrates its anniversary: 5 years ago
AMOK was founded! Only a few people know that AMOK originally started
as a 'sub-label' group of NBD in order to release music that did not
fit into their releases of the techno genre. When this MP3 group started
in 1998 we only had three sites and today the number has considerably
grown - here is the original list of sites AMOK started out with
(this is a preview of our site list from July 1998);

The first AMOK release, The soundtrack for "Need For Speed 3," ripped
straight from the PSX (this would be a nuke nowadays...), was set for
release on July 22, yet with a chaotic start in organizing the group the
date of this release had to be changed to July 24. Listed below is the
exact information on the infamous premiere release of AMOK:
"As a sublabel of NBD the official leader was NBD leader. Back then
this was Abomb-99 a true pioneer of the mp3 scene, and without him things
would for sure gone different for nowaday. Abomb-99 died in 1999 due
cancer, we won┤t forget him, even tho he wasn┤t our founder he was our
father. The following weeks we completely detached from NBD and got our
own image."
Out of our ranks grow friends as well as competitors; we affiliated far
more than 100 sites in our perpetual existence and have over 6k releases,
we hereby salute all of our friends and competitors that play by the rules
and contribute to make the scene an enjoyable place.
When you ask us nowadays, "What did you do for the scene?" we promoted our
definition of 'good music' and are among the 5 oldest of MP3 groups still
active, we asserted some of the basic rules for the first MP3 release
guidelines as well as promoting the usage of SFV for MP3's (thanks to a
good friend of ours who coded glftpd extensions back then, widely used)
When we take stock of ourselves nowadays we are more highly organized and
exist secured somewhere in a private ircd laminate, but mostly we are proud
that we never lost our roots that made us do it for nothing other than
the music we like.
MORAL DiSCLAiMER: We are very aware of the fact that our releases
contribute to the growing sale losses of record companies.
Unfortunately our style primarily targets small, independant labels
that need sales to survive.
For these reasons we ask you not to distribute this release on public
sites or P2P tools; if more and more receive their music from the net,
artists and labels will have to face even less sells than nowadays.
Please do not consider this release as a substitute to the original, but
only as a way to check out and learn about new music.
We absolutely do not approve of DJs or other individuals that earn
money from pirated music - Don't let them get their hands on it!
By buying the albums you like you disperse the guilt we feel by
releasing this music - Enjoy the music and be fair with the artists!
