the fantastic first album by fertile ground -- a stunning debut
that's one of the best underground soul albums of the past decade!
the record dips back into a spiritual jazzy tradition that
encompasses work by artists like doug carn or earth wind & fire,
but it's also got a rawer edge that works perfectly with the
righteousness of the group's message. vocalist navasha d boxley
has a style that ranks with the best of our favorite singers --
like dee dee bridgewater, jean carn, and carmen lundy -- and she's
backed by sublime keyboard work by james collins, and intricately
jazzy drumming by marcus asante. a great set all the way through
-- and filled with wonderful cuts like "ghetto butterflies",
"sweet melodies", "en hiver", "lovin you", "soulmates", and
"patches in the shade".
