one of our favorite bands of the past 25 years -- honest! fertile
ground are amazing -- a hip, spiritual jazzy soul combo with a
power that rivals the early work of earth wind & fire, or the
classic mid 70s recordings of doug & jean carn. at some level,
though, they're even better than both -- as they've got a totally
tight sound that's a no-bullshit approach to the material,
completely honest, and a real breath of fresh air in a world of
cliched politics and empty righteousness. the vocals are wonderful
-- on a level with dee dee bridgewater at her best -- and the rest
of the backing features latin percussion, fender rhodes, and
saxes. this full-length set combines tracks from the group's first
two albums -- one of which is now out of print -- for a 16 track
package that's a great introduction to their work. titles include
"libations", "broken branches", "be natural", "ghetto
butterflies", "my friend the moon", "black sunshine", "runaway
slave", "misguided warrior", "colors of the night", "let the wind
blow", "soul mates", and "sentimental groove".
