force of nature are kza and dj kent, long-time pals with a shared
interest music that veers into the territory of the dangerously
obsessive. opening up with the broken-beat of æa dark nebulaÆ, it
soon becomes obvious that fon are not content to just sample old
snippets of rare groove and feed them through the retro-mixer. no
way, this is up-tempo dance music that takes the musical
flourishes of jazz and glues them to a tight, syncopated drum
pattern that will work just as well on the dancefloor as in your
headphones. the third track, æmystiqueÆ meanwhile, goes even
further, using 808 drums to create a future house beat that sounds
like it was made in cologne, not tokyo. in fact, techno û in its
most funky guise, is obviously a big inspiration on æloopadditionÆ
û yet kza and kent instil in it a subtlety that most producers can
only dream of. check the paperclip people-style grooves of
æspiritÆ for evidence. beauty abounds in force of natureÆs work
too and youÆll hear plenty of it on the excellent æaquaticÆ, a
slow motion rhodes-drenched journey that weaves bells, warm bass
and gorgeous melodies into a rolling whole, tailor made for one of
those ibizan cafΘs that sell five quid glasses of coke. think carl
craigÆs remix of incognitoÆs æout of the stormÆ and youÆre close.
the references from detroit, london and the republic of jazz are
obviously in evidence, but æthe forces of natureÆ is by no means a
boring spotters record for those weedy blokes who spend all their
lives in record shops trying to get matey with the arrogant
bastard behind the counter. no, this is an lp for everybody û from
the most serious jazz fan to the bloke who just wants something
nice to listen to when he gets home after a hard dayÆs work.
