genf from cologne are : oliver brand (drums and electronics), olaf
karnik (guitar) and jens massel (electronics).
oliver brand used to play in several indie-rockbands like weiter
and elektro. olaf karnik has been djing under the synonyms shack
attack, sound gallery and soulful shack for the last 11 years.
jens massel aka kandis was releasing electronic ambient-like
musik.
genf's musical style is somewhere between ambient, funk, indie and
techno. their mission is to create a perfect combination between
analog and digital sources, thats why guitar and drums belong to
their instruments as well as samples and synthesizers.
after releasing their first album "rohgenf" on cologne's
cult-label finlayson (kreidler, workshop, biegen a.m.o.) they have
now released their second album "import/export" and a remix
12-inch (which includes a disco-house remix by hans
nieswandt/whirlpool) on compost records. the album was recorded in
wilerswirst in the legendary can-studios (sound enginiering by
renΘ tinner) with the assistense of ex-supreme machine bass-player
ralph obermauer.
tracks like "al green", "medienporno", "aachen-brⁿssel" and
"stockholm 13h" represent genf as a more conventional band but
songs like "softdrinks", "luftlax/postlaxs" or "herrmann",
digitaly manipulated , show an more open structure the importance
lies on the sounds and the intensity.
the title-song "import/export" is the best example for their
"analog meets digital" sound. freestyle electronica, post-rock or
dance-music genf finds it's place between the chairs. especially
live, genf draws profit from their musical-openmindness.
