Release Notes:
--------
What made BoDeans so great when they first made the scene in æ86 was their
ability to transcribe the central themes of the Seger, Springsteen and Cougar
catalogs -- love and hope and sex and dreams -- into a sound for a new
generation of listeners. Their music was an exciting blend of quirky rhythms,
jangly guitars and fluent, expressive lyrics. Thirty years and a dozen albums
hence, much has changed for the band. Co-founder Sam LlanasÆ has departed, Kurt
NeumannÆs manning the throttle on his own, the band has a thicker, less jangly
sonic palette than they did in the '80s, their themes are more mature. But, as
this dose of a dozen new cuts bears out, the BoDeans can still find some moments
of greatness.

The opening cut, "Slave," is not one of those instances, a song too slow and
preachy for its own good. But the big bad soul brother thing that follows, "Love
Somebody," is a truly beautiful thing, an infectious mix of Clydie King-inspired
harmonies, big fat Memphis horns and rock and roll soul. A fervent mandolin and
electric guitar riff opens one of the best tunes on the record, an infectiously
hooky rock club singalong called "Oh Mama."

ôI was lost in haze of yesterday, life at 21, eternity, wild and free, crazy
deeds were done," says Neumann on "Roll With The Punches," as he reminisces
about the old days with a smile and looks to the future with a touch of rock and
roll wisdom. Neumann offers a bit more wisdom about the petulance of his youth
built around a Jack Johnson-style reggae backbeat on "What I Believe" then
tosses in a nice road song with "Something I Found." Toward the end of the
record, he offers a beautiful ballad, "Your SecretÆs Safe," a thoughtful song
that recalls some of their '90s sides.

Throughout the record, NeumannÆs voice is strong and hearty, his lyrics poignant
and wise, the band effective and well-produced. ThereÆs a lot to be heard here,
a real strong record of heartland rock and roll thatÆs both earnest and
energetic.
