swathes of synths glitter across scatterlogical mid-tempo
percussion and a near-horizontal bassline on the eponymous cut of
headman's ep, producing rhythmatic, air-cushioned deep house which
is altogether too new-wave to funk the system. however, turn to
the b-side and all the promises implicit in the title are
fulfilled. kicking off with three-tone bleep electronics and a
bounding esg-style beatgroove, overlaid with rubbery bass and a
nerve-jangling guitar hook, 'headstart' is a perfectly filthy,
groin-grinding accompaniment to the strut label's recent 'disco
not disco' compilation, chronicling the wealth of post-punk funk
that fuelled new york's club scene in the early 80s, including
gems such as ian dury's 'spasticus autisticus', yoko ono's
'walking on thin ice' and liquid liquid's 'cavern'.
