the belgian ambient pop band hooverphonic featured vocalist liesje
sadonius, guitarist/programmer alex callier, keyboardist frank
duchΩne and guitarist raymond geerts. known simply as hoover across
europe, the group made their initial splash contributing the song
"2wicky" to the soundtrack of the 1996 bernardo bertolucci film
stealing beauty, followed a year later by the full-length new
stereophonic sound spectacular. sadonius left hooverphonic a short
time later, and was replaced by vocalist geike arnaert in time to
record 1998's blue wonder power milk.
geike arnaert is hooverphonic's secret weapon. like liz fraser in
the cocteau twins or tracey thorn in massive attack, geike's frail
but intense singing is perfectly fitted to hooverphonic's
unorthodox, mesmerizing songs. her haunting, almost otherworldly
voice is like that of a siren, luring the listener to uncharted
shores.
the new album the magnificent tree features instruments as diverse
as cellos, violas, trumpets, sound scapes, a children's choir, and
the enigmatic 'theremin'. what follows is a brief overview of the
lyrical inspiration and concept of each of the new songs:
1. autoharp: on tour in virginia, alex bought an old autoharp in a
local pawnshop. the box also contained a little record with weird
noises.
2. mad about you: alex's eternal rhetorical question: "why do i
always fall in love with crazy women?"
3. waves: alex's brother had invited him to drive to normandy,
france to see the total eclipse of the sun from there. but alex
hates driving, and stayed at home, daydreaming about exotic beaches
instead, and wrote this song.
4. jackie kane: at a songwriter's seminar in england, alex met
cathy dennis. together, they wrote this song about a one-time femme
fatale, now at the end of her tether.
5. the magnificent tree: a sample from a crosby, stills & nash song
inspired this slightly psychedelic song. "add an h to the title
track, and you'll spot the reference to our spaghetti western
roots", says alex.
6. vinegar & salt: alex is a passionate cook. when preparing a
vinaigrette salad sauce, he stumbled on the scientific fact that
oil and vinegar will never mix, no matter how well you stir them
up. a metaphor for a couple's characters?
7. frosted flake wood: inspired by david bowie's early "laughing
gnome" period. a psychedelic fairytale about an enchanted but
dangerous forest, featuring the bassoon, immortalized by prokoviev.
8. every time we live together we die a bit more: an outlet for
alex's 80's musical influences.
9. out of sight: originally written for, but not used in steve
soderbergh's movie of the same name.
10. pink fluffy dinosaurs: geike wrote the lyrics, but neither she
nor alex or raymond are yet sure what they mean. post your
suggestions on the hooverphonic message board.
11. l'odeur animale: features the enigmatic 'theremin'.
