     gebhard ullmann (tenor, sopranosax, bassclarinet)
     michael jefry stevens (piano)
     joe fonda (bass)
     han bennink (drums)

recorded live at the unterfahrt, munich march 7, 2001 by
gerhard gruber. produced by gebhard ullmann, joe kienemann and
monika schweichler for leo records and bayerischer rundfunk

These four veterans of new music (two Americans : Joe Fonda,
bass, and Michael J. Stevens, piano, and two Europeans : Han
Bennink, drums, and Gebhard Ullmann, reeds) need no
introduction. Han Bennink is a new member of this quartet, but
he sounds as if he has been looking for these partners all his
life. Stevens, Fonda and Ullmann contribute their own
compositions and there is one piece collectively improvised as
well as a smashing Ullmann's arrangement of Nino Rota's
"Parlami Di Me". Contemporary, modern jazz at its best.

"even taking into account gebhard ullmann's outstanding
discography, this is an extraordinary release due in large part
to one of the most impressive rhythm sections on either side of
the atlantic. ullmann rises to the occasion with some of his
     most inspired work on disc.
     **** 1/2.
(steven loewy allmusic guide usa 2003)

"it's probably a little obvious to say that german saxophonist
gebhard ullmann's master plan is keeping jazz alive but it's
hard not to come to such a conclusion on his new quartet
record." (kurt gottschalk allaboutjazz new york)
