   we never quite understood the appeal. ok, so drugs played a major
   part and just like with any populist trend, it posesses a cyclic
   nature (in fashion circles, trends return after ten years, with music
   it seems to be five). 'older' members of the dance community utter
   the phrase "revival" once those distinctive sounds of roland's
   infamous 303 bassline machine seem to make their presence felt. and
   most of us seem to love it for its hedonistic values....but what is
   it about acid?

   it may evoke memories for some and therefore be a potent reminder of
   dance music's history. but to the ceephax acid crew (aka andy
   jenkinson, younger brother of ver squarepusher) there's certainly
   nothing old-skool here. ok, so the cover art may hold cheeky
   throwbacks to appeal to those seeking retro thrills. but look beyond
   all that and you'll find an incredible album of startling originality
   within.

   we never understood the appeal of his previous work though, certain
   members of the absorb collective have been known to 'dance like
   spastics' upon hearing his more aggressive canon of work. but for me,
   it failed to ignite a similar reaction. but this is definitely 'next
   level shit'. he seems to have carved out new ideas and executed them
   flawlessly within the tight remit of acid techno. refreshingly bereft
   of the brain-curdling effects and techniques that seem to be rife in
   modern electronic music, this is gleefully flat and phat.

   coming on a two disc set, the first is the debut album proper, whie
   the second (bonus) cd is a compiliation of the two previous ep's.
   ironically it's the least frenetic and acidic tracks which are the
   most successful. the wonderfully poppy 'marshmellow' and the
   excellent 'acid le soken' clearly show a knack for coaxing
   heart-wrenching moments from those silver boxes. for those wishing to
   wig out, the hyperspeed lowride of 'culteddy' is particularly
   squelchy in the right places. while a tender homage to the sounds of
   detroit make up the moods on 'fantastic planet'.

   simply stated, it takes the acid techno blueprint and expands upon it
   on a musical level. subtlety and restraint are its winning
   characteristics and as a result will provide this album with
   longevity that'll outlast his more aggressive work. astonishingly,
   it's all delivered live and on analogue equipment.
