An exploration into Eastern musical metaphysics with sitars,
tablas, beats and synthesizers by the bucketful.
A pleasant drift through the fusion of two musical cultures, time
signatures of the West coloured with instruments of India. This is
an electronic symphony of exploration into relatively uncharted
regions of electronic fusion. Bill Laswell, part of the creative
force behind Palm Pictures, has had little trouble finding genius
in the East, and Palm Pictures strikes the mark again with Fusebox.
More ambient and neo-classical (α la Eno) than beat dependent, this
is an album that marries 11 segments into a whole, and jungle and
ambient (in the vein of Talvin Singh, though lighter in tone) into
symphonic movements. Produced and recorded in India, itÆs an
interesting snapshot of how that countryÆs musicians fuse Western
music into their framework, how electronic music is going global
faster than the record companies can keep up, and how beautiful the
exchange of cultures can be.
