│╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I couldnÆt bring myself to track down and listen ║ │
│║ to WyvernÆs debut album The Red Flame of Pain, ║ │
│║ released way back in 1990, but if itÆs anything ║ │
│║ like Lords of Winter, itÆs entirely conceivable ║ │
│║ that the reason that itÆs taken them more than ║ │
│║ 20 years to put out another album is because ║ │
│║ they were living down the shame of their debut. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Wyvern want to play progressive power metal. ║ │
│║ They obviously donÆt want to that badly, because ║ │
│║ apparently this album was recorded between 1998 ║ │
│║ and 2000, and theyÆve only just got round to ║ │
│║ releasing it. ThatÆs a moot point though, ║ │
│║ because they possess neither the musical ║ │
│║ knowledge to be progressive nor the songwriting ║ │
│║ chops to be power metal. I usually do my best ║ │
│║ not to be unreservedly critical of bands, what ║ │
│║ with the subjectivity of taste and all that, but ║ │
│║ this album is offensively bad. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I can see bandmembers nervously tapping chief ║ │
│║ songwriter and guitarist Simone Ferrari on the ║ │
│║ shoulder as he maniacally cobbles together ║ │
│║ disparate riffs with the kind of foolishly ║ │
│║ courageous disregard for the laws of structure, ║ │
│║ tempo and key that could be regarded as insane ║ │
│║ genius if he had any idea whatsoever of what he ║ │
│║ was doing. ôBut Simone!ö They cry, ôHow can we ║ │
│║ possibly nail such an abrupt and ridiculous ║ │
│║ tempo change when we record?ö ôHow can we write ║ │
│║ a vocal melody to ║ │
│║ fit this absurdly dense arrangement?ö. ôFools!ö ║ │
│║ Quoth the Italian songwriting visionary, ôIÆm ║ │
│║ Simone Ferrari! The laws of music do not apply ║ │
│║ to me! This is prog, damnit! Prog! You just ║ │
│║ canÆt see the vision!ö ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Every song here is a bloated monstrosity heaving ║ │
│║ at the seams with bankrupt musical ideas that ║ │
│║ have been shoehorned into the already turgid ║ │
│║ structures. Simone Ferrari doesnÆt care that ║ │
│║ these ideas donÆt sound good together, he knows ║ │
│║ that no matter what shape the hole is, and no ║ │
│║ matter what shape the block is, if you apply ║ │
│║ enough force to the problem, any block will fit ║ │
│║ into any hole and damned be the aesthetic ║ │
│║ consequences. The overall impression is one of ║ │
│║ being stuck in ║ │
│║ a confusing and capricious landscape where ║ │
│║ nothing makes sense and everything you think you ║ │
│║ understand changes into some new and unutterably ║ │
│║ hideous form the moment you turn your back; the ║ │
│║ musical equivalent of Lovecraftian geometry. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ And thatÆs just the music. I am not exaggerating ║ │
│║ when I say that Vocalist Fabio Bonaccorsi sounds ║ │
│║ like the man from the Go Compare adverts singing ║ │
│║ drunken karaoke. In fact, I donÆt think Wyvern ║ │
│║ could have picked a worse vocalist if theyÆd ║ │
│║ picked the actual Go Compare man to be their ║ │
│║ singer. There are hints of Michael Kiske ║ │
│║ (Helloween) in BonaccorsiÆs performance, but ║ │
│║ itÆs a Michael Kiske who is suffering from ║ │
│║ amnesia, and as a result has entirely forgotten ║ │
│║ how to sing. Likewise, there are hints of the ║ │
│║ worst aspects of the voices of Warrel Dane ║ │
│║ (Nevermore) and James Labrie (Dream Theater) in ║ │
│║ there too; Bonaccorsi against all logic manages ║ │
│║ to combine his flexible sense of pitch with ║ │
│║ DaneÆs unorthodox note choice and LabrieÆs ║ │
│║ whineyness. Needless to say, he has nothing in ║ │
│║ the ║ │
│║ way of DaneÆs power or LabrieÆs technical ║ │
│║ ability. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The final nail in the coffin of Lords of Winter ║ │
│║ is the simply horrendous production. As a sound ║ │
│║ engineer, it brings a tear to my eye. I couldnÆt ║ │
│║ find the name of the man responsible for this ║ │
│║ atrocity, so IÆm choosing to believe he was ║ │
│║ either murdered by an Assassin sent from the ║ │
│║ League of Sound Engineers, or the shame of ║ │
│║ having perpetrated this crime against music was ║ │
│║ too great for him to bear and heÆs living in ║ │
│║ self imposed exile deep in the Kalahari desert. ║ │
│║ I donÆt even know where to start describing ║ │
│║ thisà every individual tone sounds greasy and ║ │
│║ disgusting, from the ║ │
│║ sluggish fart of the bass to the abrasive rasp ║ │
│║ of the guitars. The person who mixed it didnÆt ║ │
│║ bother to turn off the dynamic sensors on ║ │
│║ whatever he used to trigger the kick drum, so ║ │
│║ drummer Fabrizio BernardiÆs leading leg is ║ │
│║ noticeably louder than his other leg. The levels ║ │
│║ of the harmonies (and boy, do Wyvern love to ║ │
│║ overdub harmonies) are hilariously out of whack, ║ │
│║ adding to the clutter of the musical landscape. ║ │
│║ Finally, BonaccorsiÆs voice is drenched in ║ │
│║ effects to the point that you canÆt actually ║ │
│║ make out what heÆs singing, and most of his ║ │
│║ over-dubs seem to ║ │
│║ be out of time. This is utter rubbish. ║ │
