▓ M C Apt (AKA David Plowman) is the fresh new voice of ▓
▓ Halifax hip-hop. His lyrical flow touches on subjects ▓
▓ ranging from nature to society, he beatboxes and he ▓
▓ produces his own beats, all of which he showcases on ▓
▓ his latest disc, Canvastripper. ▓
▓ "I've always been interested in music and hip-hop was ▓
▓ just something different, I guess," says Plowman, who ▓
▓ got his start freestyling with friends in high ▓
▓ school. "I guess I liked the intensity and the way it ▓
▓ was delivered." ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Plowman started listening to the more aggressive ▓
▓ aspects of hip-hop, such as Tupac Shakur and the ▓
▓ Notorious B.I.G., before friends introduced him the ▓
▓ more creative pastures of the genre. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ "The first stuff I listened to was angry," the ▓
▓ 19-year-old Plowman says. "Now I've been listening to ▓
▓ a lot of Sage Francis, Atmosphere & I'm a big fan of ▓
▓ Eyedea. I just went to Ottawa just to see an Idea ▓
▓ show." ▓
▓ ▓
▓ In his spare time, he produces beats with his ▓
▓ roommates, who are also musicians and sometimes ▓
▓ bandmates. The results shine through on his third ▓
▓ record, which is more organic sounding than most ▓
▓ electronically processed hip-hop records, with slinky ▓
▓ acoustic basslines and thick bass-drum kicks. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ "In our basement, we got a ridiculous amount of ▓
▓ instruments," Plowman says. "We got a drum kit, a ▓
▓ stand-up bass, a trumpet, a banjo, a ukulele, three ▓
▓ electric guitars. I record everything into my ▓
▓ computer." ▓
▓ ▓
▓ His studies at University of King's College also go a ▓
▓ long way in influencing his ideas. Canvastripper is a ▓
▓ hip-hop concept album based on Dante's Inferno that ▓
▓ follows an autobiographical character on a ▓
▓ cross-continental journey. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ "The past two albums that I've done, in a way, it's ▓
▓ stories," Plowman says. "But in a way, itÆs all ▓
▓ philosophically related. I draw from my own ▓
▓ experience, looking back at where I came from. I ▓
▓ wanted to make an album that came full circle." ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Plowman says he would like to make a modest living ▓
▓ off of hip-hop one day, much like his role model Josh ▓
▓ Martinez, an old childhood friend from Halifax who ▓
▓ has had international success as an MC. Not ▓
▓ surprisingly, Martinez appears on his record. ▓
▓ "Josh is someone I really look up to," Plowman says. ▓
▓ "He's shown that you can make it as a hip-hop artist. ▓
▓ That's the direction I want to head." ▓
