: recorded this April at Toe Rag Studios with Liam "White :

: There's always been something timeless about Holly :
: Golightly's blend of roots, garage rock, jazz and :
: blues, but on 'Slowly But Surely', the British songbird :
: digs deeper into the roots of American music for an :
: album that's more honky-tonk, more roots and, :
: remarkably, more compelling than her last couple :
: platters. :

: Sounding like it's the strains that, in another day and :
: age, would have shot out of an AM radio transmitter, :
: then pulled down through a rickety aerial antenna to a :
: popping speaker, 'Slowly But Surely' tackles the weight :
: of American music without kowtowing to its monumental :
: weight. Golightly, who backs off her rock influences :
: with this album, could go walkin' after midnight with :
: Patsy Cline, hang at Duke's place with Ella Fitzgerald :
: or walking in the rain with Ronnie Spector without :
: missing a beat if she chose to. She doesn't, however, :
: and instead opts to explore territories all her own. :

: Self-consciously pursuing the vintage sounds of a :
: pre-rock America, Golightly makes her songs sound :
: strangely modern without losing any of their inherent, :
: museum-piece charms. Working with the simplest :
: materials - a couple twangy guitars sometimes joined by :
: a standup bass, sometimes by an organ, sometimes left :
: to burn of their own accord - Golightly blurs the lines :
: between everything from jazz and rock to blues and :
: folk. 'The Luckiest Girl' dips into nuggets-era organ :
: melodies atop a slinky bass line, while 'Through Sun :
: and Wine' parades the faux-salsa rhythms of a British :
: samba for a feel that's half way between vintage lounge :
: and big-band era Latin. 'My Love Is', with its bopping :
: standup bass, finger-snap rhythms and Golightly's cool, :
: detached delivery, could roll out of a '50s jazz club :
: and still sound essentially the same. :
: 'All Grown Up' playfully mixes Heatcoatees-style garage :
: rock with a lighthearted, almost tongue-in-cheek vibe :
: that, were it not for Golightly's vocal poise, could be :
: pre-Beatles rock'n'roll. :

: Although Golightly dismisses some of her rockin' side :
: for this record, it's a powerful choice. Stark and :
: shameless, 'Slowly But Surely' proves that Golightly :
: isn't just another vintage revivalist nutcase. :
: She's the real deal - a living, breathing trip into the :
: some of best musical moments of the 20th century. :
