Oli is an experienced DJ and the man behind Casbah Records, one of
the most respected rare vinyl mail order services out there. Anyone
who hunts for those true jazz nuggets has probably come across one of
his famous lists. He has been at it for over 10 years, travelling the
world uncovering some of the most exotic beats and samples. Oli has
combed the most unlikely second hand shops and markets from the
Americas to Asia, and his 15,000+ rare record collection documents
many of black music's best moments. His productions, as you can
imagine, are full of tasty grooves and well-kept secrets.
After growing up in Madrid, Oli moved to Glasgow in the late '80s
when Rare Groove, Chicago House, and the whole warehouse scene were
happening. In '89, he started DJing, organizing one-offs and parties
and playing a mixture of funk, disco, NY garage, and early house. By
'91 he was buying vinyl "big time" and secured a Saturday night
residency known as "Casbah", playing heavyweight jazz-dance, latin
jazz and new funky sounds. Soon after, a radio show on Sweet FM
followed called "Down in the Casbah."
As his DJing and record buying started to reach insane levels, he
began to see how difficult it was to get a hold of those sweet,
soulful sounds. Initially the plan was to buy/sell enough to keep
himself in new tunes, so he set up Casbah Records and before long his
lists took off with a strong interest worldwide. The selection: jazz,
funk, soul, fusion, latin-jazz, bossa disco and beyond. Always on the
lookout for those hot 'new discoveries', this led him into contact
with many of the more foward-thinking dj's on the scene, and his
regular customers have included Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, DJ
Spinna, Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, LTJ Bukem, Jazzanova, Rainer
Truby, Nicola Conte, Russ Dewbury, Snowboy, Kyoto Jazz Massive, and
others. He travelled and maintained contacts with sources in Europe,
USA, Japan, Brazil, Eastern Europe, Thailand, and Mexico.
During this time he began experimenting with samplers and as a result
also began selling a lot of beats and samples, mostly to the NY hip
hop producers, but also to European house/nu jazz producers. Little
by little Oli began concentrating more on production, experimenting
with mixing beats and live instruments and after growing tired of
Scottish weather he decided to move back to Madrid and set up his
studio, where he is now producing tracks full time.
