Amazon.co.uk Review
The seventh volume in the Back To Mine series
marks a return to form on the chill-out front
by Morcheeba. Following their contentiously
upbeat Fragments of Freedom, Back To Mine
borrows from its funkier elements but pilfers
more from the laid back vibes of Big Calm.
The whole mix tends towards the soulful, with
contributions from Annette Peacock and Alice
Russell but there are also a couple of great
slices of chilled alt country from Jim White
and Lambchop, along with the somewhat
terrifying Dr John's "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya"
- a swampy slice of voodoo pop guaranteed to
give more horizontal listeners "the fear".
There are also some real hidden delights,
including David McCallum's "The Edge", on
which the erstwhile TV star provides the
inspiration for Dr Dre's "Next Episode" and
the stunning blend of soul samples and hip-
hop that is "Hidden Crate" by The Giant. As
chill out compilations go, this has it all
-electronica, soul, hip-hop, beats, breaks,
samples, country and a couple of pinches of
utter weirdness. Kick back and enjoy.
