'Eats Worms' is consistently downtempo and includes 19 tracks with
lots of very funky melodies, offbeat samples and deep hip hop/slow
break basslines. Some of the tracks are mere interludes ('Appollonia'
is a fantastic 120 seconds long) but there is something for everyone
here. 'For Your Ears Only','Absolute Radish', 'Monks Theme' and
'Bat Beats' are blissed-out ambient soundscapes, excellently
programmed with Sunday afternoon beats, the occasional sublime and
sometimes funky guitar and some great keyboards: all are an
indication of the mellow potential of Mr Bird.
Needless to say, Mr Bird has many influences. Take 'Bird Song': this
incorporates samples of Big Bird from Sesame Street, and layers these
over slow phat lo-fi beats, bongos, scratching and a new cut of the
'Birdy Song'. And check out the funky beatbox on the sample-tastic
'B.T. Boxer'.
This is a simple album but highly effective. It's a mix of clever
programming, filtered beats, real instruments and scratching. As such,
it is an eclectic ambient journey that consistently makes you smile.
Watch out - the worm has turned and Mr Bird is learning to fly! AH!
